Charging Black and Decker Simple Start

I am trying to charge my "Simple Start" The directions say to Turn the unit On, Connect the 120 V Adapter, Plug the adapter in and push the Recharge Unit push button. The unit will beep once and flash green indicating the unit is charging....

My unit is beeping constantly and the flashing red.

Please help - I want this as an emergency backup for my 75 year old mother's car. I recieved this as a Christmas gift last year. Over the summer my battery died, and this actually came in handy. Now I've got a friend whose car died a few days ago and needs a jump to get to Pep Boys, and I'm having the same spaztic blinking and beeping. It snowed out last night, and the unit was in my car, but it's been inside for some time now with no signs of any progression. I'm very disappointed.

Exactly the same. Very frustrating. Is there no solution other than returning?

  • ar76 Apr 28, 2009

I left mine in the trunk of the car for a long time, and never did any maintenance charging. So, of course, the battery is deeply discharged. But, like so many people are reporting, it won't go into recharge mode. The green light just flashes and it beeps incessantly. I am going to leave it plugged in, and turned on, but not in 'recharge' mode for a few hours- will see if that helps. But judging from the reviews on here, it won't. Too bad mine is probably too old to return. :(

First plug the charge adapter into an outlet, then plug into the unit. Push the power button to turn the unit on. Now, push the button for the light. The light should come on. At this point you hit the charge button and the green light should start blinking and there will no beeping. Then turn off the light. The green light should continue to blink and the unit will charge. This worked for me, hope it helps!

Here is what the Black & Decker website says "If the unit starts to beep continuously, let it beep for about 1 minute, then turn the unit off and unplug the charger from the unit. Allow the unit to sit a full minute and then repeat the charging process.
If you still experience difficulties with the unit beeping after about ten attempts to charge, we recommend bringing the unit back to the retailer for an exchange, or taking the unit to the nearest factory-owned service center for assistance."

It didn't work for me though.

My 24 volt black an decker battery charger want charge

Batterys have a life span associated with them. Typically about 2 years depending on how often you use them and your charging habits. The newer batteries(in the past 4 years) do not have memory, but since it is a black and decker and it is low cost item they may have used an older technology. I am assuming you have checked the obvious such as the charger does work. Battery is inserted properly. An easy task to try would be to buy a new battery and make sure you discharge it before you charge. Run your drill till it stops. Then charge it to see if the charger is working. If not, then you have a charger problem. If so, there may be fuse inside that can be replaced or something simple like a solder joint broke.
Hope that helps

I need the instructions for Black and Decker Start It How do I recharge it?

This unit is recharged using any household 120v outlet. Remove the rubber cap from the recharge port on the top of the unit. Plug the barrel end of the adapter cord into this port and then the put the adapter into the wall outlet. Make sure the power switch is in the off position. To check the charge level push the button to the left of the 3 indicator lights. When the green LED lights up, the unit is fully charged, (yellow is moderate charge and red is minimum charge).
Try to charge the unit from the minimum (red) charge level to maintain the maximum battery life and use of the product.
If you have misplaced the manual I am providing a link to it from Black and Decker's site.

Is not charging - no red light

Yes, it can be replaced. Can be ordered from Black & Decker. Some people would say it's worth fixing others would not. Don't know cost of battery -- probably under $20.

Charging Black and Decker Simple Start

okay people... this is a long one, but I just did it for two units that were having this problem and it worked both times.
The problem is the unit sat on the shelf and doesn't have enough power to operate its charging cycle.
Take an extension cord and plug in the outlet charger while you also plug it into your cigarette lighter... now attempt to charge it (you will hear the familiar alarm). Now, turn on the LED light... after a short time, turn off the light and the unit will begin to charge regularly. You can then use one of the chargers to finish the job.
By doing this you are providing plenty of power to the battery while the light drains it at a slower rate... kinda forcing the battery to condition/cycle; it's just allowing the battery to take the charge. Hope this helps.

Power indicatoror

From the manual:

"Attach the barrel tip of the AC Charging Adapter to the AC Charging port of the POWER TO GO® and plug the standard two-prong plug into an appropriate, functioning 120 volt AC outlet. The red Battery Status LED indicator will flash, indicating a proper connection has been made and the unit is charging. The green Battery Status LED indicators will gradually light as the charge level rises. The POWER TO GO® must be charged for approximately 11-17 hours prior to first use. All Battery Status LED indicators will be lit solid (the red indicator will stop flashing) when the unit is fully charged.

When i plug in to car socket the Garmin displays a black background and no directions but a lap top shown with a gas pump. What does this mean?

means its is trying to charge, and you may have a charging cir problem, try removing the battery if it has one, and then connect it to the auto adapter, you might also make sure the polarity on the adapter is correct and the proper voltage. also reset the unit with a hard reset.

Hope this helps
