It sounds like the locking switch on the side of the SD card is in the "locked" position. Remove the card from the camera and slide the tiny switch on the card to the unlocked position. That should do it.

Reformat the SD card with your computer. This will delete all data on the card. Do you use a usb cable to upload pics to your computer or put the SD card in a media slot? Either way, find the drive that corresponds to your SD card or camera in "My Computer". Right click on it and select 'format'. A new window will open with a check box for 'quick format'. Check the box and click OK. A prompt will appear stating all data will be erased. Click OK. In a few seconds, the card will be reformatted.

SOURCE: card protected

Use a separate card reader to download your pics. Then, you can format the card in the camera to get it to work properly.

Go to the playback function (right facing arrow), select menu, press the trash can icon, go to the bottom of the drop down list and select all images. You can find an advanced users manual at http://www.canisius.edu/images/userimages/mdcweb/Page_5743/Canon_SD1000.pdf

Use the menu to unprotect the image then you can delete. Also you can format the card but that will remove all the images on the card so make sure you've saved it elsewhere.

How do I erase "protected"

Unprotect them first. While viewing the picture, press [MENU] and select "Protect". Full details are in the "Protecting images" section of the manual (page 100 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one at

Deletion of multiple images

"Erase all" is an option on the menu (play menu). Using this will delete all images on the card unless they are protected. This is on page 82 in the Advanced User Guide.

You can also erase all images, including protected images, by using the Format option. This is on page 30 of the Advanced User Guide.

Canon Rebel XT EOS won't erase pics

If the image has a small icon of a skeleton key along the bottom when viewing it, it means the image has been protected. You have to un-protect the image to erase it. This is done from the Playback Menu (the one with the arrow on the tab). Specific instructions are on page 115 in the manual. (Manual is available here if you don't have it.)

I have the HV 20 HD camcorder. I need to erase ALL THE STILL PHOTOS AND yet I think I accidently "protected" them and they won't erase. I need help with both unprotecting and erasing all the...

Image protection and erasing are covered on pages 64 and 65 of the manual (you can view/download the manual here). If you are going to erase all images, you can just initialize the card (see page 65). It will erase all images, even protected ones.
