If there is one person, then that person holds
each one end of the rope in each hand. They swing the rope from behind their
head, over their head, and then under their feet. When it is under their feet,
they must jump over the rope so it turns continuously. The other option is with 3 people where 2
people hold the rope on either end and turn it, while one person or more will
jump in the middle. When there are two
jump ropes being used this is called double dutch and is a fancier, more
difficult version of normal jumping rope.
At the moment it is not. However there is a push to have a Jump Rope Sprint for the 2016 Summer games. This would be a 100m race where the contestant would run while twirling rope. Jump rope is a part of the amateur athletic union's junior Olympic Games.
There is single rope, double dutch, wheel, and long rope. Single rope is when a jumper holds their own rope and performs to music. Double dutch is with a team of 3+ people turning 2 ropes opposite to each other. Wheel jumping is where the jumpers hold one handle of their own rope and one of another jumper's rope. Long rope is done with a long rope.
