Turned on the camera and followed all of the directions but when try to take a picture all we get is a black screen. It looks like the display on page 4 of the users guide. Icons 1,17,14,8,and 15 show up but now view of any picture just a black screen.
Nikon Technical Support Team on the web site should need to know about this.
Check if in fact the images do show but only dimly if you look carefully along the screen if you can this would suggest the back light has failed.
But if you can see menu item but no play back#then this suggests another type of firmware failure

Look at some of my posts today. This may be that the lens is off track and may be able to be pushed back by a little force as you start the camera....see my other posts on this problem.
The movie should be transferred automatically when you transfer the images from the sd card. There should be a folder where the pics are transferred, usually through a program called Picture Project. Look for an icon with the Quicktime logo on it or a movie logo. That should be it.
See my posts on this problem. By forcing the lens with you fingers into the camera, it may put it on track. This can damage the camera even further, but may be worth a try. You can try to pull it out when starting, and then pushing in on turning it off. Worth a try, may work.
Not sure, but if you can play back pictures from a card, then more than likely you have a CCD problem. It may not be the ccd directly, but maybe a connection to it. Depending on the camera, Canon and Nikon will fix a limited number of models. Search for service notice of ccd or service of ccd. This sounds like a broken or cracked LCD screen. The backlite is working, thus you will get the white screen. The LCD could also be disconnected internally, or has other problems. But this is a direct problem with the LCD. A camera like this can usually take pictures, and you may be able to use it to set the menus by using the video cable to the TV or computer screen (some flat screens have video inputs).
I have pressed the display button to no avail and the magnifying button.
