Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum Logo
jessie campbell Posted on Dec 31, 2012

My dyson d14 animal keeps cutting in and out. When it's on, the hole above where the filter is, keeps making a loud suction noise and it won't clean up hair and dirt.

The filter was recently cleaned and also the rotating brush, but since then it hasn't been cleaning as well. I turn it on, for a few seconds it will work, then a loud suction noise coming from on top of where the filter is keeps happening. I've turned it on and off, opened the filter and reclosed it, but it's still happening.

Vacuum Cleaners require AIr-Flow. Your machine is not getting any air-flow. The noise you hear is a valve opening up to prevent your machine from overheating and burning out the motor.
You probably have an obstruction somewhere in the machine. Dysons are kind of known for that in the vacuum cleaner world.
Check all air channels and clean them out. If that fixes the problem you still might have issues that caused it to clog up.

I posted the part second because it takes 24 hours to complete it.
Be sure you wash your Washable Pre-filter. It needs to dry for 24 hours. Never put it back in the machine wet.

Once it is completely dry reinstall the pre-filter and your machine should be back to normal operating functions.

Let me know f this helps.

Remove the hose & wand completely from the machine it unclips at the bottom of the back.

Leave handle in full upright position & switch on do you still get the sound of something blocked ?

If yes remove the (U) shaped inspection port again at bottom back of machine now repeat last test what happens ?

SOURCE: Hair on top of washable filter

your animals are shedding.if you have pets then you will have to clean the filters more often depending on how much their shedding.its probably a good idea to clean the filters after each use if your getting that much hair.you might want to turn the vacuum over and clean the brush roller and the underside because the static electricity from the hair will cause it to cling to the under carriage

SOURCE: hair on top of washable filter on d14 animal

One way or another, dirty air is by-passing the cyclone. Check that all the seals are undamaged and in place, especially the big black ring at the bottom of the yellow bit inside the clear bin.  Also check that the bin base closes tight after you've emptied it.

SOURCE: My Dyson CDC14 Animal just started making a wierd

Hello,

Something could be jammed, or not rotating freely, maybe an improper alignment with the brushes, or a blocakage within them. Try to re adjust the brushes :)

Vacuum works quietly and well when using the wand attachment, as soon as it is lowered into 'floor vacuuming' position it makes a very loud noise but doesn't seem to lose suction.

Hi Ismaias, it's Jack at Dyson.

The issue you're describing sounds unusual. If you think the noise coming from the cleaner head and brush bar is excessively loud, you might like to follow the steps shown in the video below to make sure nothing is jamming or obstructing the brush bar:

If you're confident there are no obstructions, but your machine is still sounding much louder than it should be, please do not continue to use your machine. At this point, it would be best to contact the Dyson Customer Helpline directly so we can provide further assistance. If a repair or a replacement part is needed, we can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson warranty.

When you have your DC50 to hand, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Rear canister valve

Hi there Coire, it's Jack at Dyson.

The valve you've described is the suction relief valve. This will open when something is restricting airflow through the vacuum cleaner.

In normal use, we recommend washing both filters at least once a month, as shown in the video above. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely somewhere warm before replacing them in the machine.

If you find this doesn't resolve the issue it's likely your machine has a blockage - to locate and remove this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24/dc24-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/check-suction

For any further advice after you've given this a try, please contact our experts directly by calling the Dyson Customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Dyson animal

Is the noise a loud screaming or a grinding/vibration? The screaming is an air flow problem and you'll want to check your hoses are clear and all the seals are tight. The grinding is an issue with the roller/belt/clutch/motor/housing. From what I'm reading, both problems are common on the Dyson animal.

Dyson noise.

Check all ports for a clog, there are removable covers you can take off, also check the hose for a clog. Make sure all filters are clean. Worse case is a problem with the motor.
