It sounds as though your magneto has gone out of timing. Between the flywheel and the drive shaft there is a small square key that keeps the flywheel from slipping on the driveshaft. The spark coming from the magneto is not causing the spark plug to fire at the exact time it is supposed to. You will need to remove the side cover from the motor, and check to see if the slot in the flywheel and the slot in the driveshaft (where the square key fits) are aligned exactly. if those two slots are not aligned (even a little bit) the saw's engine timing is off. This is caused by the chain being stopped suddenly while you are cutting (for instance if the chain pops off of the chain bar. it will be necessary to remove the flywheel (using a flywheel puller) and replace the key. then reassemble the saw making sure the chain tension is correct and that the magneto to flywheel spacing is correct.

so using a punch and hammer is NOT the correct way to remove the flywheel?

NO. You will break the flywheel. You need to remove the bolt and washer from the top of the driveshaft and use a gear puller to pull the flywheel off, then replace the key, reinstall the washer and bolt and torque the bolt down so the flywheel does not "slip on the shaft and shear the key.

Homelite chain saw XL925 cord pull too hard but if you remove the spark plug then it pulls OK.

I have a Homelite XL and was having problems with rope pulling from difficult to unable to pull rope while trying to start saw. I removed the muffler, squirted some WD40 through the exhaust port ABOVE and BELOW the piston compression ring. Then pulled the rope about 20 times without spark plug to fully lubricate the piston and cylinder. Left it till the next day, pulled it through about 20 more times, put the spark plug back in,and it works well now. Guess it was just gummed-up a little and the lubrication freed it.

Chain saw won't start

Before you try to start it, push the primer bubble on the side 3 or 4 times, then pull the choke all the way out. On poulans they can be tricky. When pulling the choke button out, make sure it does not go back in. After you pull the crank rope and you hear it "hit" push the choke back in and pull the crank rope again. It should start after that. If it still won't start, check for a faulty spark plug.

Chain saw won't start - pull starter pulley hard to pull?

If it worked fine the last time you used it, then pull the spark plug and try pulling the rope. See if it's easier or if gas shoots out of the plug hole. I've seen this happen when the diaphram in the carb goes bad from sitting over winter. It loads up the cylider with fuel and makes it very difficult to pull the rope. If there is no fuel in the cyliner and it's still hard to pull, make sure there is nothing binding the clutch/sprocket. I've had chucks of wook lodged in there that caused it to bind the crank output, which resulted in a hard pull on the rope as well.

Recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn't retract pull rope

Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.

Rewind don't work

as you put the side with the recoil starter back on the saw, ensure the rewind pack isn't binding. before tightening the screws, pull the rope out a few inches and let it rewind. if it won't, something is binding. keep moving the side panel till it will rewind. I have done this before myself. get it all put back together and it won't work.....

Pull cord on chain saw will not retract.

Most of the rancher models are easy to look at. Take the four screws off that hold the starter cover on.When off have a look to see if the pulley is ok or one of the starter dogs(pawls) is jamed . If dogs ok take the screw out of the centre of pulley and remove it ,check for spring tension. if there is just be carful to leave sring in housing. look at spring if broken or out of shape renew it and rope.check for cracks in pulley. When renewing spring and rope get correct rope length and diameter. don't over tension new spring. hop this helps
