VGA is analog - HDMI is digital
if u have a cable w/o a converter it won't work unless your video card supports digital signal output through VGA port function. Please consult with your laptop's user manual for more information.
You can use either an HDMI cable or a VGA cable to connect your computer to your TV. Your computer has both HDMI and VGA ports. You can use either ports but you cannot use both or else your video card will crash.
The tv must have a VGA port, and you need a VGA RGB video cable, then you can connect your computer with your tv, and then do the same you do when you conenct a projector to your tv and that's it.
Hi there. Check on the back of the TV for a VGA input port, if it has what you will need is a male to male VGA lead and a mini stereo to mini stereo audio lead to plug into the headphone port on the laptop to audio in on the TV.
hey fox,
sounds to me like a connection problem. If the compaqs output is vga, you need to convert the input (tv side ) to hdmi, component, s-vidio... what ever you can find. Typically when you hook up your computer to a flat screen or such, its best to try to use the hdmi ports or the rpg. But if thats not available you need to take the outout from your laptop ( whatever type that might be and input it into your flat screen tv. If you input laptop into tv under ( eg..HDMI) then when you VIEW it you need to select the correct source on your flat screen. Such as hdmi or pcmi or rpg.I know that the do sell alot of cables that adapt from one type of connection to another. Typically only one cable is required from the laptop to the flat screen. If you think about it you are only using the flat screen as a monitor.
If your computer has a VGA port on the side then it has video out. I've never seen a laptop without one but I guess that does not mean they don't exist :) I'm not sure what model of Viera you have, but the one that comes up on Amazon has a VGA input built in. If yours does then a simple old school monitor cable from a desktop computer will do the trick.
Here is a good one cheap: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10201&cs_id=1020101&p_id=3621&seq=1&format=2
If not, you can buy a VGA adapter: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040113&p_id=2509&seq=1&format=2
Also, if you want audio to play through the tv/stereo, you will need to get a cable to carry audio as well. This is what you will be needing: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021803&p_id=663&seq=1&format=2

The stuff I linked to are for 25' so you can hide the cables around the room from wherever you would be sitting but you get the idea.
If it gives you hope, I did this with my Fathers compaq laptop to his panasonic 50" plasma and it worked great!
