Traeger BBQ trips circuit breaker

My traeger BBQ after running for more than just a couple of mins. will trip the GFI and circuit breaker. It has not done this in the 4 years that I have owned it and has been plugged into the same outlet the whole time. I replaced the outlet and the GFI, it still does it. I can plug anything into this out let and it will work with the exception of the traeger. Is there a fuse or something I need to look at in the trager itself?

sane problem on a brand new grill-I'm sure our problem is the fan motor as the fan doesn't run freely-we are sincerely disappointed in what we thought to be a quality product

Mine is doing the same thing, but it does it within seconds of turning it on. I'd assume you as well have the digital thermostat. I've narrowed it down to what I believe is the hot rod igniter (or the purple connector). Unplug it and it should eliminate tripping and order new part or get warranty part.

My two friends and I bought new Traeger's in December of 2009 and within 45 days began to trip the GFI for all 3 units. I am an electrician and did some tests to find the igniter is shorted to its case. This is a dangerous electrical condition and could result in electrocution if you bypass the GFI for a regular outlet. I have replaced the two igniters for my two friends and the problem has gone away. Mine is still failed and I am waiting for a replacement. While talking with Traeger representative, he stated they had some bad igniters installed and are replacing with a better quality unit. Good luck in your efforts

I had the same problem. Replacing the igniter rod did indeed fix the issue. I followed this helpful video which made the process very straightforward:

I had the same problem and bought a replacement hot rod and intended to follow this video to replace it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dP48cVR558

When I went to replace it I noticed that the fire pot was completely filled with ash and sawdust. I cleaned it out with a shop-vac and tried again - it no longer trips my GFI circuit!

So now I have an extra hot rod in case I ever need it - but I'd recommend that you watch the video to see how easy it is to clean out the fire pot.

I have been using my Traeger for ~ 4 years and it has been fine until recently when it started poping the GFI. I tore the whole thing apart and realized it was the auger. Due to the rainy weather the dust from the pellets had turned into glue and clogged the auger. After I cleaned it out and put it back together, I turned it on and realized I had burned out the ignitor while troubleshooting it. I replaced it and it worked fine the next two times but then it started popping the GFI about 10 minutes into the warmup period. I was able to determine that it is not the GFI. Then it started working again for me so I stopped troubleshooting it. My wife tried using it a couple of days later and the GFI popped again. I'll try starting it with the igniter and then disconnecting it after the fire is started.

I have the same issue with the GFI tripping. The unit works fine on a non GFI circuit.I called the Traeger rep and he said right away it is the igniter rod. Replacement of the rod should fix the problem

You need to take other devices off that circuit. Also outdoor circuits usually are on a GFI circuit.which are very sensitive to flucuations.

Nothing works, no fan, no auger

Sounds like no power. Is it plugged into a GFI circuit that might have tripped. On its website in the FAQs Traeger mentions that if pellets get wet, this can cause a GFI circuit to trip and they suggest a specific remedy. Check out their website at http://www.traegergrills.com/ and if necessary contact their service techs who can help you troubleshoot.

GFI keeps kicking out I repleaced the hot rod, could it be the digitl thermomater

Could be that your auguris binding and putting heavy load on the motor. It could also be a bad GFI circuit. I doubt that your thermometer could put enough load on the circuit to cause the GFI to trip unless there's a big-time short in it. Could also be a short elsewhere in the wiring harness or fan motor.

Treager bbq keeps tripping breakers

I would strongly recommend you pull the control panel and inspect the fuse. Before tripping a breaker, your GFS outlet should trip, and/or blow the fuse.

If the unit is tripping circuits, then there is likely a short. Given the material draw from the hot rod, I would start with that. Putting a multi-meter on it to test voltage, should give you a basis to confirm with Treager if it's within spec. Sometimes it's simpler to replace the rod, but this can add up quickly if not the root issue.

Traeger trip gfi

Could be the hot rod igniter has accumulated too much moisture.

From Traeger:
Why won't my Grill Ignite?
  1. If your grill is plugged into an electrical outlet with a GFI (ground fault interrupter) plug, chances are the hot rod has absorbed or been exposed to too much moisture and is leaking to ground causing the plug to trip.
  2. Open your cooking chamber lid, remove cooking grill, angled drip pan and U-shaped firepot cover. Is there ash build up in the firepot and/or around the firepot? If so, this needs to be cleaned out. The ash is choking out the fire.
  3. Check the fuse on the back of the control board. To do this, first UNPLUG the grill from the electrical outlet. Then, unscrew the control board and look at the fuse-is it blown or not?
  4. If the fuse is good, check for power by switching the colored plugs first. Unplug the purple plug and the orange plug. Plug the purple plug into the orange plug. Now plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet and turn the grill on. Does the induction fan operate? If so, you will need a new hot rod and fuse. If not, you will need a new control board. Unplug the purple from the orange and reconnect the plugs together to their correct color plug.
  5. Always start your grill on the SMOKE setting.

My Traeger keeps tripping GFI outlet. Replaced outlets and this still happens. Suggestions?

I think you have already discovered that the outlet is not at fault. So, now you have to troubleshoot the electrical parts of the grill and their wiring. Most of this you can do with a visual inspection, looking for frayed wires, incomplete connections or bare wire(s) touching the metal framing of the grill and even a circuit that is wire incorrectly.

In case you have misplaced your Owners Manual (which has a wiring diagram) have included a link to it that you can download and print for future reference. Hope this helps you to further troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know.

Grill will not turn on

I assume you are referring to the auger motor. If so, have you checked the electric receptacle the g=auger motor is plugged into? Plug another electric appliance, like a lamp into the receptacle to see if the lamp works. If not, look for a tripped circuit breaker in your home's breaker panel. If one is tripped, make sure nothing is plugged into the offending receptacle and reset the breaker. Plug the auger motor back in to see if the breaker trips again. If does, there's an electrical issue with the auger motor or the cord.

If none of the above is the problem, i have included a link to Traeger Industries website. There you can find and download the Owners Manual for your Grill-Smoker, which also has a Trouble Shooting Section.

The auger on my 9 yr old grill has stopped and my family is not happy! I do not have a Mr Fix-it husband so am on my own. Any suggestions?

Make sure that there electric power to the auger motor. If it's plugged into an exterior wall outlet, unplug it and plug in another electric device (like a lamp) to make sure that outlet still works. If it doesn't, go to your home's Circuit Breaker Panel and check for a tripped breaker. If you find one that's tripped, reset it and try plugging in the auger motor and turn it on. If it starts working then suddenly stops, it probably tripped the circuit breaker again. That would indicate one of three things: The cord from the auger motor may be bad; the auger motor itself may be shorting out; the circuit breaker may be failing. If it's the receptacle or the circuit breaker, I'd advise you contacting an electrician to have them check and replace it. for the Auger Motor, go to Traeger's website home page and look for Trouble Shooting or Customer Support. Better safe, than sorry.

Hope this helps solve your problem.
