Traeger BBQ trips circuit breaker

Mine is doing the same thing, but it does it within seconds of turning it on. I'd assume you as well have the digital thermostat. I've narrowed it down to what I believe is the hot rod igniter (or the purple connector). Unplug it and it should eliminate tripping and order new part or get warranty part.

My two friends and I bought new Traeger's in December of 2009 and within 45 days began to trip the GFI for all 3 units. I am an electrician and did some tests to find the igniter is shorted to its case. This is a dangerous electrical condition and could result in electrocution if you bypass the GFI for a regular outlet. I have replaced the two igniters for my two friends and the problem has gone away. Mine is still failed and I am waiting for a replacement. While talking with Traeger representative, he stated they had some bad igniters installed and are replacing with a better quality unit. Good luck in your efforts

I had the same problem. Replacing the igniter rod did indeed fix the issue. I followed this helpful video which made the process very straightforward:

When I went to replace it I noticed that the fire pot was completely filled with ash and sawdust. I cleaned it out with a shop-vac and tried again - it no longer trips my GFI circuit!

So now I have an extra hot rod in case I ever need it - but I'd recommend that you watch the video to see how easy it is to clean out the fire pot.

Installed brand new igniter. Pops GFI. What a crock of cra p this product is. After owning this for 4 years, it has been something every single year. Some guys get lucky, most guys get a lump of s***.

I have been using my Traeger for ~ 4 years and it has been fine until recently when it started poping the GFI. I tore the whole thing apart and realized it was the auger. Due to the rainy weather the dust from the pellets had turned into glue and clogged the auger. After I cleaned it out and put it back together, I turned it on and realized I had burned out the ignitor while troubleshooting it. I replaced it and it worked fine the next two times but then it started popping the GFI about 10 minutes into the warmup period. I was able to determine that it is not the GFI. Then it started working again for me so I stopped troubleshooting it. My wife tried using it a couple of days later and the GFI popped again. I'll try starting it with the igniter and then disconnecting it after the fire is started.
