One day with the gps, it was working good, connected it to the computer to load some music and update the software and when I disconnected it, everithing was frozen. It wouldn't turn off with the regular on /off button. I tried the reset button, but every time I turn it on is the same, it just displays the welcome screen and stays there forever until I push the reset button again and turn it off. I tried connecting it again with the computer, and I can handle the device from the computer software, but once is disconnected it's gone. Any ideas?
I had the same problem...I contacted Technical Support at TomTom and found out the following: I had purchased my unit through Dell and there seems to be a lot of calls in to them to get it going. It IS possible to get it working again. This is a copy of the message I received from Technical Support...it does include formatting the drive...you will need to back up your maps... After all maps have been copied to the computer, we can reformat the disk. This is done by entering to My Computer and right clicking on the drive that displays the TomTom. From there, left click on format and choose start (not quick format). In one to two minutes, the disk will be formatted and all files will have deleted. This does mean we will have lost all demos for audiobooks and mp3 player. After doing this, we can copy the map folders back onto the TomTom drive from the desktop. Then, we can open the TomTom HOME program. Once the program reads the TomTom drive, it will check for updates. These updates should include a TomTom program application and voices. We can download these updates and then choose to install them. Once installed, we can then safely remove hardware. The unit should reboot on its own, but we may have to reset the unit if it does not. After doing this, the unit should be in full working order and you should be able to navigate. Just a quick note...in order for the TomTom to work correctly, we must have an application, a map, and at least one voice installed on the hard drive.
Hold all manufacturers and importers of any product ACCOUNTABLE. Consumers have poisoned themselves by paying any price for any product, without and sense for true value. This only fuels a market full of cheap, unreliable ****. From cars to consumables, WE don't write enough letters, file enough class-action suits or hold designers and engineers accountable to make better products. I drive a MINI Cooper. Supposedly a car owners rave about. What are they thinking? This is the most unreliable, pricey-fix car I have ever owned. Send you Tom Tom back to the manufacturer with a threatening letter. Join a forum of other users who file a class-action suit who share the same problem and demand a fix within a set time-limit. You have to hold a gun to people's heads (figuratively, of course) these days to get them to respond, since the apathy seems to be rampant. Don't talk about it. DO IT!
I tried this solution offered by winkuk on mobileplanet.com. and still had problems. - Perform a paper clip reset on your device. Do not turn it back on. Refer to www.tomtom.com/4229 for reset instructions. - Connect the TomTom to the computer and turn the TomTom on. - Go to Start, My Computer and browse your TomTom device, which should be listed under removable drives - Delete ALL files not in yellow folders - Delete the yellow folder ?ttntools? if it exists in the TomTom device - Safely disconnect you TomTom from the computer - Remove TomTom HOME from your computer. (control panel Add/Remove) - Go to the link http://www.tomtom.com/home - Scroll down to ?Install TomTom Home and hit enter - When TomTom Home is re-installed, connect the TomTom to the computer - Open TomTom Home and Log-in (lower left corner of screen) - Select download your updates - Update your device with the application (upper right corner of screen) - Dosconnect the TomTom from the computer and test if it works. If it still exhibits the problem try this: -Connect the TomTom to the computer - Open TomeTom home - Select Restore Backup BUT DO NOT PERFORM THE RESTORE BACKUP UNLESS YUO ARE SURE YOU HAVE DONE A BACKUP PREVIOUSLY - If you have a backup copy, do the restore. - Open Start, My Computer, right click on the TomTom and select ?Format? - Format in the FAT32 format. - Once format is complet, open TomTom Home - Select ?restore Backup? - Disconnect the TomTom from the computer and test. After I was finished I was able to start the TomTom but I had no maps, nada, zippo. Talking to TomTom tech support confirmed that I had no maps on the system. Also there are no maps on TomTom home or on the installation disk, so the only solution they could offer was to send it in for repair or go to where I bought it and get a replacement. The problem seems endemic. It occurs for people trying to download music, get new maps, or do a backup etc. I Am not a happy camper.
We have had an identical problem after downloading some music. We are about to try your solution. Up to now our only advice was to return the entire unit to where it was purchased and go through the process to buy another one (which involved a considerable wait period). Hope this works for us as well.
All the points above are noted but can I also advise this to anyone with a TomTom. Whatever media is used to store maps , POI , and other data , be it an SD card or on the internal drive . If your TomTom is working backup the media to a PC . Do It Now. Then in future if you have a problem you can always format the media and reinstall from the backup.
You first have to make a copy of your maps, before formatting the harddrive.
I had a freeze every time I downloaded updates on my Tom Tom. I took it back to Halfords in frozen mode and the salesman put a pin into the tiny circular gold mark in the recess in the rear of the screen and this immediately reset the machine to working. He also told me to keep the machine switched on to the mains power unit while downloading, as this would prevent the surge which causes the screen to freeze. I've not downloaded anything since then so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the above so when my next download comes I'll let you know.
I had same problem of frozen screen when connecting to computer - Halfords told me to keep power supplied whilst downloading as this will prevent power surge disabling Tom Tom and if freeze occurs reset by putting a pin or similar into the tiny circular recess in the main screen - so far it has worked
N1wgk.....you are a star worked first time and my wife (who's tomtom it is) will no longer be killing me!
Well, I contacted the customer supoort and they fixed my problem. First of all, I would suggest you to call them to see if they can help you, it may be something different of what we have. But anyway, the solution they gave me was to go to this tomtom page http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=6211&Lid=4 and download this little program called "clear flash tool". Then, connect the equipment to the computer and run the program. That shouldn't take long, probably 20 secs, after that the equipment will reboot and will come up to life again. I hope this help.

Hi, I've got the same problem. But if you press the reset button, then switch the Tom Tom off and back on again it should function normally. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: Tom Tom go 910 screen get frozen every time I turn it on
Sounds like your firmware is corrupted. I have fixed a few 910's with this same problem. If you have the Tom Tom Home program installed, try to reinstall the firmware using Tom Tom's website.
Make sure you always select to disconnect the device before unplugging it. You might have unplugged it from the PC while it was still writing data. This will certainly corrupt the firmware.
