A recently visiting 'washing machine expert' and I are baffled. I have a Hotpoint BWM20 washing machines which has recently just stopped working. When we try and select any programme, then press the 'on' button, the timer clicks round 1 notch but then nothing happens, at all (not even the usual drum 'jerk' to check the drum isn't jammed). We have:
- checked water supply, fine.
- changed the pump, no difference.
- checked all hoses for blockages, nothing.
- checked for loose connections, none obvious.
- checked the belt and drum (fine + spin ok by hand)
The power and timer seem fine. The only thing that we have spotted is that, once the timer has clicked a notch, there is a 'white box' at the rear bottom of the washing machines which makes an electrical 'buzzing' noise.
Any thoughts / tips out there, or is this lovely white good heading for the scrap heap?
Many thanks
Thanks for the input tresilla... I think for £75 + P&P + fitting; it's going to be heading for the tip and us out shopping for a new machine! Just can't justify spending that much on a gamble...

The white box you refer to contains the main module which drives the whole issue.
with no start, this module is probably faulty and is an expensive part

I am not an expert on hoover - mainly hotpoint...but..
To empty your machine of water reset the programmer to Final spin. the machine should empty normally.
On hotpoint if you have a fast flashing light its most likely to be 1 of 2 things.
1. The belt from the motor has broken. (price for belt is less than 20 pounds.)
2. The brushes in the motor have worn down too much to make the drum turn. Look underneath the washing machine to see if black power (Carbon) is deposited under the motor. (Price for set of brushes is less than 20 pounds)
Labour should be no more than half an hour by anyone decent.
Normally these spin problems are just a blocked filter, which is located at the bottom of the washer behind a white panel which you can undo with a coin, drain water first, undo plug from hose into a bowl etc then take out filter and clean, hope this helps.
poss the interlock or the module has gone I have found that the neutral suppy on the board to the interlock can breakdown if the module has gone call an expert has these modules when new need to be configured to your machine as 1 module can serve about 10 models
