I've recently been given a Dell Dimension 2350 desktop to wipe it, as it was previously virus-laden and just completely unusable. The wipe went without incident, I installed a copy of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3, and all of a sudden I cannot access the internet to get all of the Windows updates that I need, the drivers and everything. Once I have internet connectivity, I know what to do.
Reinstalling windows solved the problem for me.
If you go to the Dell website and put in the service tag, Dell will tell you exactly what ethernet driver you need. If you don't have access to another PC (you wouldn't be here asking - ha ha) you could simply buy another network card and install it, then disable the existing one in the device manager.
Please post with the results of your efforts, this is not too difficult to solve. Good luck.
Then open control panel
add new hardware click yes or next scroll down to network hit next or yes
then first try with automatically detect
then restart pc when it's done
do you know your exact ethernet driver
do you have a internet icon in your taskbar

Yes I have. It says the driver wasn't detected.
I don't know the exact ethernet driver to be honest, but no I absolutely dont have a internet icon in my taskbar
Same problem, same model, integrated NIC. I've gotten the driver from dell's website as well as the broadcom site. No conflicts in device manager, it just keeps trying to acquire a network address indefinitely.
I'm starting to think the port is just bad now. any other ideas?
have your gone into device manager to see if that driver is showing
