No Light No Heat Wacky Display

I believe I have a compound problem with my microwave. Several months ago, after absentmindedly operating a grill off the same circuit as the microwave, the microwave oven light no longer works and the display automatically returns to 95.00, rather than 0.00 when finished. All other functions worked as normal. Several days ago, the microwave stopped working but the cooling fan, turntable, grill, bake and all other preprogrammed operations still are functioning normally. This seems to be more than just a door switch issue. Is this worth fixing or should I get used to the idea of a large toaster oven with no microwave features on my counter? Thanks.

First of all, how old is the oven? It sounds like 3 separate problems, but I would doubt that any were caused by using the grill on the same circuit. Most often, that will just blow the breaker. Importantly, have you had any other electrical items fail in the last few months? Have you had an unusual number of light bulbs blow in the home, or have they blown much sooner than you'd expect? A "yes" to these questions could indicate a fault in your house wiring which must be quickly addressed by the power company or an electrician. Barring those complications, here are my thoughts: I would say the oven light just failed. It could have had its life shortened or ended due to door slamming. For the display to return to 95.00 instead of 00.00, I would suspect that the control dial is worn, damaged or contaminated by grease, dirt, etc., causing a slight shorting effect. 95.00 is the maximum cooking time - the extreme top setting of the dial. This kind of controller problem could also be caused by grease or moisture on the control circuit board. This is most likely to build up when boiling on the stove without first turning on the hood fan (a must) or if the hood fan has a clogged filter or restricted air flow in the duct work. It could also be due to spraying cleaners directly on the control panel / keypad instead of using a slightly damp cloth. Lastly, the lack of cooking operation is most often caused by (yes, door switches or door switch mount trouble) a loose connection at the magnetron, or a bad magnetron. First to address would be the cooking problem, and the first thing I would check is door switches and switch mounts. The lamp would just need to be replaced, but in most newer models, you have to remove the outer cover, which means taking it down from the wall. Safety dictates that this is a two-person job, and you might need to have your original installation instructions on hand to do it. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk If you need to order any parts (other than a light bulb, which should be available at the grocery store) I would recommend Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com If you have a problem with the controller, that would have to be professionally repaired. We do that for customers nationwide for $39.95 in most cases.

We have had this microwave for 7 years. Not had any problems until about six months ago when the volume went way down when you push the buttons and timer, but still heated. Then all of a suddon it does...

Remove the cabinet ... check the door safety interlock switches for proper operation. Most of the time, no heat problems can be traced to the oven thinking the door is open. These switches tell the oven if it is open or closed. If they are faulty ... well ... the oven thinks the door is open and will not turn on the heat.

Make sense?

Sharp carousel convection/grill/microwave maybe R990

Hello :

This happens because of a bad door switch . The plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door .

Check also the turntable . It could be out of it's right place .

WARNING :

1:Don't slam your microwave door because this may cause the fuse to blow and this is the reason of bad door switch problem .
2: A microwave is capable of giving you a serious electrical shock even when it's unplugged , so I recommend you to call a repair technician for help .

Light won't go on; Model MMV1153WB-O

You can download owner's manuals and installation instructions for several brands (including Amana, Frigidaire, Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Litton, Maytag, Roper, Tappan, Thermador and Whirlpool) here.

Enter it as MMV1153WB0 (no dash, zero on the end, not "oh")

Or just get it here, to be more exact.
On page 4, it says:

"Installing/Replacing Filters and Light Bulbs
■ Grease filter: Grease filter is on the underside of microwave
oven. Clean monthly. Slide the filter away from the tab area,
and drop out the filter. To reinstall, place end of the filter into
the opening opposite the tab area, swing up the other end,
and slide it toward the tab area.
■ Charcoal filter: The charcoal filter is behind the vent grille at the
top front of the microwave oven. The charcoal filter cannot be
cleaned, and should be replaced about every 6 months.
Remove 2 screws on the vent grille, tilt the grille forward, lift it
out, and remove filter. To reinstall, place the filter into its slotted
area – wire mesh side up, replace vent grille, and secure with
screws.
■ Cooktop light(s): The cooktop light bulb(s) is(are) located on
the underside of the microwave oven, and is(are) replaceable.
Remove bulb cover screw, and open the bulb cover. Replace
bulb, close bulb cover, and secure with screw.
■ Cavity light: The cavity light bulb is located behind the vent
grille at the top front of the microwave oven, under the bulb
cover, and is replaceable. Remove 2 screws on the vent grille,
tilt the grille forward, and lift it out. Open bulb cover and
replace bulb. Close bulb cover, replace vent grille, and secure
with screws."

HINT: Unplug the oven before removing or installing the bulbs, or you may need this service.

It wont heat anymore and the tray stopped turning a few months ago

Im sorry to hear you are having this trouble.

I believe you have a faulty door safety interlock switch. Please remove the cover and check the small micro switches with your ohm meter.

What frequently happens is this: because of opening the door during oven operation, the small points inside the switches arc and burn. Once they cannot make contact, they are not able to tell the oven the door is closed and when the door is not closed (forget what YOU think the door is doing) the oven will not turn on the magnatron. No magnatron, no heat.

Please let me know what happens

Neff HTHB86K Microwave oven.

The microwave unit is faulty as you can read from the display or the controller isn't working correctly, you should take your MW oven to an authorized service center. It can be repaired by yourself but it's highly dangerous because it has high voltage inside and microwave energy.

Oster Microwave/Convection/Grill

Try the unit out on some differnet outlets. Microwave ovens pretty well max out the typ. house circuit and going to one that is better wired or less loaded may make the difference
