Asus 1000 hd canot connect to 3 yr old netgear router

My new asus pc can connect to open sites at libraries, coffeee shops etc but not to my netgear router even if I make it non secure. It can connect to others non secure networks. It can connect to a friend's netgear router set to WEP when I use his password but it cannot connect to my home network in WPA or WPA 2 or WEP. I have a second desktop that connects to my router using a wireless USB so I know the network is working.
An Asus tech said my router may be too old and a Craigslist PC expert came to my house and tried different things and finally gave up and said the tech might be right . Is this the answer ?

Hello, i have a wireless router Netgear WNR 1000

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

I don't know how to connect my eeepc to my wireless router, when it does connect it says it's "unsecured" and I can't open any web pages, however when I connect directly to the router via cable it...

You need to open up your router (virtually) It is locked tight in security.

Visit the manufacturer web site to get the software or google Network Magic to access the settings (Google Network magic)

My daughter has an old Dell Inspiron and it works great with a Belkon router but when they got the netgear wireless router she gets a blue screen. What do I do?

Need to check for driver compatibility for the Netgear router . Contact Netgear for backwards compatibility or purchase a router that will be compatible with your PC.

Hi Guest….not sure why this issue is occurring, but this is what I would do:

1. Connect to router via Ethernet cable (not wireless)

2. Try 1234 instead of password

3. Ensure caps lock is off (OK, it’s an old one, but it can happen)

4. If the router came from your ISP, check their website – sometimes they install their own firmware and default password (eg, UK Sky users - try password sky)

5. Reboot your router, then see if it accepts the defaults

6. If you bought the router new, it's fresh out of the box, and you’re setting it up – and the defaults don’t work - contact Netgear

7. If anyone else set up the router, or you bought it second-hand, or you think the password has changed and you don't know the new password- it’s time to consider a hard reset.

This is a last resort, as it will clear all settings and cut off your internet connection, until you set up the router again. A hard reset is only recommended for experienced users (ie if you set up your own router in the first place). However, if this doesn’t restore defaults either, contact Netgear.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Wireless Network Dropping Out- NetGear WPN824 V.2 & Atheros AR5006EXS Wireless Network Adapter

Fergus,

Steps to troubleshoot are as follows.

1. check the physical connections. Go to a broadband testing site to see if you are connecting correctly b/c i am assuming you are wanting to connect to the internet. if not see next step. A common problem with internet connections is the timeout setttings on netgear you should set it to 0 for indefinite.

2. if your problem is related to just the connection between your pc and your router then you should just plug a lan cable in first to see if you can connect to the router without dropouts. This will help you to determine if the problem is with the router.

3. If it is the router then you need to double check your router configurations. Common problems are firewall rules, port forwarding settings etc etc.

4. if it is not the router then double check that the pc and the network card is working properly. If it is then make sure the the wireless adapter support the protocl eg. wep, wpa, wpatsk etc..make sure they are the same and that you should be setting the network key.

5. one final check is you need to turn off some of the rangemax functionality on the router b/c your wireless adaptor probably doesnt support it. try unsecure connections for a while to see if it works then start adding functionality to determine which one is the culprit.

I hope this help.

smeags.
