If the freezer is on top then empty out the freezer and remove the bottom and back liner of the freezer compartment usually phillips screws. In the back you will see the freezer coils along with a defrost element. Below these two items u will see a drip tray that collects water from the coils on defrost cycle, in the center of the pan will be a drain hole that connects to a hose that leads to a pan under the refrigerator.Normally the water is collected there and evaporated. The hole in the tray in the freezer is clogged. Thaw it and clean it until you can pour water in it and it goes to the pan down below. please rate me
the thumping noise is normal
About the diameter of a pencil. Moisture collects and freezes on the coils. Defrost timer moves to defrost and melts the ice off the coils with a heating element. The water collects in the drain. If it cant go down through the line to the pan near the compresor for evaporation then it freezes in the drain under the freezer coils when the defrost timer shuts the heating coils off.The problem compounds every cycle of the defrost timer.

jimbo460, thank you very much!
we took this apart - the bottom liner - about 6-8 months ago when it did it last. we used a hairdryer to manually defrost the drain line to open it. this time i'll remove the back liner also.
i'm curious though. why would it freeze to begin with? it's done this twice now. if something is in the line, i don't know how i'd get it out. about how big is the inside diameter of the drain line?
thanks again!
