Okay, are you using the original PS2? If you are then it more then likely is the age of the console. The original PS2 console actually can't play some of the games that were made after the PS2 slim was released. If your using the slim than the only thing i can advise is to try using a laser lens cleaner disc and see if that helps :)
Games like God of War 2, Grand Turismo 4 etc take time to load and some times these games are not loaded by consoles with weak lenses or dirty lens.You should consider cleaning your lens.Cleaning lens might solve your problem plus here is a trick for you to play such heavy games(Although its about playing DVDs on PS2 but you can play your game by following this tip the same way.) Does it make a clicking sound as it tries to read the disk?
I had the same problem and it turns out that it is the console. But it is easily remedied. I cannot take credit but follow this link and you will see it is an easy fix.
