I'll need to know a little more to be of any help.
SecuRom does do all kinds of nasty things if it doesn't like what you are doing and unfortunately it is next to impossible to completely remove from a computer. That said it could really be anything. You might try using a windows restore point and go back a couple of weeks on the chance it was caused by drivers. This might also fix a problem caused by securom but I haven't tried it before.
Ciarston_200, it sounds like you are having all kinds of driver issues. Try running the free software Radarsync (available from www.radarsync.com or from www.download.com) to scan your hardware and check for drivers. If you decide to go this route please be careful and make restore points. Also, as this is free software it does come with bundled software which you should decline to install.
While the software is far from perfect if the driver you need is not available from the vender it may be the easiest way to get it. It might also clean up some other driver issues such as your Card Reader.

i tried finding the driver software on the given website, but I can't seem to pinpoint which driver it is on the list. It may be because, this laptop originally ran on windows vista operating system, but I recently downgraded to windows xp home edition. This disabled my use of the sd card slot and the Wireless lan card built into my laptop. Both these issues proved to be un-resolvable at the current state. I have learn to deal with both of these issues accordingly, and I have no regrets. But as for the burner, I do in fact, need to find a solution, because I do not want to purchase another burner just for a faulty driver.
