LG HDTVs sadly don't support hard drives, or movies from the usb 2.0 port. (yet) (I'm guessing that you are talking about that.)The TVs only support JPEGs and MP3s from a flash type USB drive.

You will find the transfer rate is too slow to make a good movie watching experience, in my opinion.

But simply connect the drive to your computer like you normally do and connect your TV to your computer as normal, then begin playing the movie.

You posted this in the Dell Dimension 3000 catagory. If you are really trying to connect an external hard drive directly to your TV and play movies with no computer involved, it can't be done.

The LG's will support an external USB hard drive, but it seems the USB support was intended for thumb drives, so yuo need to do the following to get it working:

  1. the drive must be formatted FAT32 (like thumbdrives)
  2. keep the file names short
  3. keep the directory structure simple and as flat as possible
I have a 60GB laptop drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure drive working really nicely with good transfer rates. It takes it's power from the USB socket and is working fine.

Hope this helps.

Really! my lg has no problem supporting a 500g ex hd dr, it says it doesen't read it, but it does and I might add that it plays seamlessly. However, my lg is new as of 7/2011

How do I play movies from my external hard drive connected by USB to my MX android TV box.?

The TV should support the file system to read the directory structure of the Hard disk and also the the file type to read the video file. Try mpeg / jpeg file on a thumb drive on the same USB port.

I have a philips tv model number 32 pfl 3805h/12 and was wondering if i can watch movies from an external hard drive? what format does the hard drive need to be?

Your TV does not have a USB port so you cannot connect an external HDD and stream movies on to the TV. But you can buy a HDD based media player which has the necessary output sockets as well as all kinds of decoders built in to stream movies on to your TV.

How to make WD MyBook essential 1Tb work on sony bravia EX300 LCD TV ? I tried to connect the external hard drive on my sony dvd player and it appears on the tv screen that the USB device is not...

this will not work by it self you will either need to buy a computer with media software that will support your hard drive or a DVR that will support you hard drive.
the hard drive connected to the device you have tried to connect to are not smart devices they will not support a stand alone external drive even though there is a usb port.

I own a LG Plasma 42PQ2 tv and I want to watch movies from an external hard drive through the USB port but it does not show any movie files on the hard drive.

The USB port on the TV might not have enough power to power the external hard drive. Can you try putting a movie on a USB memory stick instead, and see if that works?

External Hard Drive

If you plan to store movies on the HD, better buying a 1TB hard drive. WD Mybook is one of the best external HD.

To rip and store DVD movies into the hard disk you will need a specific software, like the ones below.

DVD Converter - convert DVD video to AVI/MPEG/DIVX files

Freeware converts DVD AVI MPEG WMV RM to MP3 or iPod Video

Movie2x Freeware DVD Converter Download

DVDx (freeware from labDV)

Playing movies from external hard drive

Hi rox09
Well you can rip your DVD to any external drive using and third party DVD ripping software ,once you do that you will get a AVI,MPEG and any common fomats your DVD player supports

Inorder to play those files in your DVD player ,you need the check whether your DVD has a USB input port or else if you laptop or computer has a S-video out put and your TV has S-Video input ;you can play directly from your laptop/computer to the TV using a S-video Cable which is available in any Computer shop.
I hope this helps
