How to Use Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate Modes for my Laptop?

Shutdown is safer, close all program.
Hibernate is good for long period (e.g. stop during the night). All the data will be saved on the HD.
Suspend is similar to Hibernate mode, but data are copied to the RAM, so if you aren't conneted wtih power cable and battery goin to 0%, you will lost your work that aren't saved.

How can I enable hibernation on my HP Mini 5101?

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa, the world's largest product support community.

Generally all Windows OS has an option for sleep & hibernate.

Windows XP Users
  • Sleep Mode
By letting your computer idle for a period of time, i.e. not moving the mouse/touchpad, or not pressing any keys except when playing a video, the screen or desktop monitor will go dark. You can resume the computer by moving the mouse/touchpad or by pressing any key on the keyboard.
  • Hibernation or Standby mode
Click Start, click on Turn Off Computer, then click Stand By.

Windows VISTA/Windows 7 Users

To put Windows VISTA & Windows 7 in Sleep or in Hibernation, the steps basically the same. First click Start, then click the small arrow head located to the right of the Start Menu, then you click Sleep or Hibernate.

Why does my HP vs17 monitor screen keep going to blank black screen like it turned off but did'nt.....blue power button light is still on? Everything is running but no picture.....keeps happening everytime...

this old monitor has 2 issues.
1: it has CCFL tubes that love to burn out (backlamps)
most this old are long go, yell, dim.,blinking or DEAD.
2: push the menu button on front of mon. turn off power saver.

3: if the PC goes to sleep, or hibernete mode (parked)
then that is 100% normal
if you dont like feature then go to windows control panel
click power, ICON and turn off all monitor sleep /hibernate modes.

that assumes windows, no OS stated.

if the lamps are dead,
use flash light pointed to sceen, see data. ? bingo for bad CCFT tubes.
as seen here

Aspire one with windows XP. Won't turn back on while in sleep mod

I've had spotty luck with Windows and sleep or hibernate modes. I would suggest just disabling sleep/hibernate mode. The options can be found under the control panel under power options. While turning off the sleep mode won't help your battery life, if you ask me, it beats having to power off the laptop by pulling the battery out. If you don't want to turn it off, you can try adjusting the amount of time it lets pass before it goes to slee.

Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, I hear the computer winding up then it stops. The screen remains blank. Sometimes I have to restart the computer 4 or 5 times before it comes on. And sometimes when it...

Yes, WinXP's relationship with your laptop's drivers has gone sour, like Pet Sematary. Bury your laptop...no wait, just reload the laptop's drivers (Dell or Toshiba or whatever) so hibernate works correctly...or un-fiddle with any hibernate/sleep/low-power utilities you use. Alternately consider that your laptop's reading signals from the battery or a cooling fan; telling XP or the BIOS that component is not in tolerable condition, and thus shutting down.

Have your feet rolfed while you fix that situation up.

Hit the keyboard keys. It is better to just turn sleep and hibernate off and just use a screen saver or tun it off.
