Camera screen remains black when I turn on shooting mode

When I turn on the camera in shooting mode and open the screen the screen remains black, though I can see through the viewfinder which I ordinarily could not when the screen was open and functioning.

I wonder if I somehow inadvertantly changed the screen. If I did I don't know how and don't know how to restore the usual function. I hope the camera is not broken.

  • Issue Jan 22, 2009

When I turn the camera on I get a black screen most of the time. The ability to actually take a picture is there, but the picture is black. I cannot seem to figure out a logical way to consistently take pictures. Most of the time the camera comes up with a black screen. I have plenty of space on my memory, I have fresh batteries (I've even purchased different types to see if the more expensive Ultimate batteries work. I've even purchased rechargeable batteries. WHEN the camera works (which I do not seem to have an ounce of input on) the pictures are great. When it does not cooperate I get nothing but frustrated. PLEASE HELP!

We can see icons, if we press display the image will not show. We can view photos in our memory card but are unable to view or take new images (black only). Doesn't happens all the time.
It’s like the lens inside is stuck closed even though the lens outside
    is extended.

Turn the camera on. With the screen showing, press the DISP button and this will give you a selection of different screen views i.e. squares for aligning shot squarely; black - thru viewfinder only; etc. Different modes will give you different screen displays i.e. P setting screens are different to when you have the camera set on AUTO.

Hope this helps.

Camera still takes pictures but LCD screen remain black(lit, differnet from when screen is off) at all times. Batteries are fully charged.

Please make sure to check if the battery is fully charged. Second, check the menu option for battery saving mode and turn it off. If the battery is getting old and not charging fully anymore the priority of the camera is the shooting mode.

Mode switch has broken off and the camera screen says no image

it probably remained locked on the viewer and there are no images capture stored into the camera ..that's why it says that ....and it must be a way to restore the function of that button cause no matter if you lock it permanently into the the shooting mode its still a issue of getting pics out of it ....most cameras have to be on viewing mode when are plugged on the data cable ...but ..if you can open it and switch it on the mode that allow you to take pictures...you can always get the pictures from the SD card directly via an card reader ...adapter ( USB) that cost only a few dollars...

Camera screen blacked out in shooting mode

No, dont fret. It sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off to save batteries. You would then just use the optical viewfinder. To turn it back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Shooting mode will not operate

Your camera has a defective CCD imager. Please return the camera to Canon in New Jersey and they will replace the CCD at no charge to you. This is a known issue and should be covered under extended warranty. Good luck my friend. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
