Not recognizing memory.

The Asus P4S800-X MB can use Dual channel DDR memory and single channel memory. The dual channel memory which comes in matching packs. (Normally 2 DIMMS per pack) is the faster memory.
In other words if you are installing, 4- 512MB DIMMS of PC3200 all memory should be matched,
or you're MB may not see all connected DIMM'S.

See page vii in you're manual. If you're running windows XP, Home or Pro edition the bios will show up to 4GB of memory installed but windows XP 32bit will only show 3GB of memory. As mentioned above all 4 of you're 512MB of memory should be dual channel and run at the same speed. You can run both single channel and dual channel but you must follow Table 1 in you're manual. (1-9).
Example; PC3200 400MHz.
Or 4-512MB PC2700 333MHz. See page 1-9 for memory configurations and the QVL list supported.
Check out Asus FAQ's; http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S800D-X&product=6&os=17

This should help you configure the memory.
Good luck!

Memory upgrade, download upgrade to run 400

According to the specs of this motherboard, it only supports 333, 266 and 200 MHz DDR SDRAM. It does not support 400 MHz DDR SDRAM.
This motherboard has only 2 memory slots, each can accommodate a 1 GB memory module. Higher capacity memory modules are not supported by this motherboard.
No BIOS upgrade is available to provide support for 400 MHz DDR SDRAM memory modules.

Upgrade motherboard?

Hello Keith,
The present Motherboard in your computer is Asus A8AE-LE. It has a lot of upgradign options.

It will support the Following CPUs.
Up to AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+
Up to AMD Athlon64 4000+
Up to AMD Sempron 3200+

Also, it has the following memory specifiations.
Memory Installed 1 GB (2 x 512)
Maximum allowed 4 GB* (4 x 1 GB) requires the replacement of the installed 512 MB DIMMs
Speed supported PC-3200 MB/sec
Type 184 pin, DDR SDRAM
DIMM slots Four
Open DIMM slots Two

And the PC has a PCI Express x16 slot you can install a high end Video Card along with a power supply upgrade.

So before you go ahead with replacing the motherboard I would recommend you to consider these options as we can cut down the cost to a greater extend and having the same iprovement on performance.

If you wish to upgrade the motherboard you can use any motherboard having ATX form factor [9.6 in X 9.6 in] in the computer. The CPUs should be selected according to the motherboard you have chosen.
Hope this helps
