I upgraded from a D80 Nikon to a D5100. Colours appear wahed out with the new D5100. Using the same 18 - 135 lens
If the colors are washed out on the LCD screen but appear OK on your computer, the problem is likely with the LCD itself.
If the color is washed out in both the LCD screen and on your computer, you can try adjusting menu settings to intensify the color on the images. Also, you might want to reset the camera to its default settings. I can do that on my D-90 by simultaneously holding down the "AF" and "+/-" buttons on the top right hand side of the camera. Holding down those buttons for about ten seconds will restore the default settings.
If these steps don't help, return the camera to the seller for a replacement.

Try re-setting the camera? On the D40 it is 'Menu' scroll down one to Custom Setting Menu (a pencil) and click reset 'ok' yes 'ok' this worked for me.

My camera is now fixed. It was a tiny speck of dirt on the sensors between the mounting of the lense & the camera. The uy that fixed it said it is a problem with the camera because they are so sensitive.

Try cleaning the lens contacts with alcohol or sprit

This may be due to the aperture ring in your lens. Try the following:
1. Turn off your camera
2. Move the aperture ring clockwise then lock
3. Turn on your camera and try again.
If this does not work, do the same thing again but turn the aperture ring counter-clockwise.
