My computer says plugged in, not charging

My laptop battery is not charging. When I hover over my battery icon it says "plugged in, Not charging" Is this my battery gone bad or my charger? not sure what to do. I don't want to buy a brand new battery if it is the charger and likewise the other way around.Thank you very much for your help and time

One more thing, beware of inexpensive batteries. Sometimes they don't work well with your laptop.

If your battery will not charge, you need to run a test on some components on the laptop. The battery, the charger and the laptop itself. Once you detect the faulty conponent then you replace it with a new one.

To test the battery:
1.Power off the laptop,
2.Take out the battery,
3.Insert it in another laptop,
4.Check of it will charge,

If the battery holds a charge there, then it means the problem is not from the battery, but if it does not hold a charge, then it means the battery is defective and need to be replaced with a new one.

To test the charger:
1.Unplug the charger from the present laptop,
2.Connect it to another laptop to see if it will charge.

If it charges the laptop, then it means the charger is alright, and if it does not charge the laptop, then it means the charger is bad and need to be replaced.

To test the laptop:
1.Turn off the laptop,
2.Disconnect your present charger,
3.Remove your present battery pack,
4.Insert a well tested battery into the laptop,
5.Connect a well tested charger to the laptop.

If it powers on, then it and charges, then it means the laptop is working fine, but if it does not charge, then it means the connection port of the laptop is bad.Hope this information was helpful.

If you are sure that your laptop charger is malfunction and you are willing to purchase a third party charger, the following ac adapter is your first choice:

SOURCE: charger to computer connection intermittent

You will have to take it to a techie and have a new d/c jack installed on the motherboard. Easy job, but want to know what you are doing. About $60us in my market for jack and labor.

Good luck, and please rate this response.

SOURCE: Laptop only runs on battery even though p/s is plugged

Hi cgarcia557
this does sounds like a problem with the toshiba power management utility.
Sounds like you've already verified the output voltage on the adapter.
The next thing i would check is for any looseness at the DC power jack on the laptop itself.
if this is snug and the center pin is not loose,
the next thing i would do would be to try reinstalling the toshiba power management utility;

ToshibaToshiba Power Management Utility for Windows XP/2000(v1.23.2.5; 08-20-2004; 8.3M)
Save this file to on your hard drive and then run it.
If this doesnt solve your problem, the next thing i would be looking at is a BIOS issue.
If you arent familiar with this type of procedure, its best to have someone on hand who has done a few successful BIOS flashes.
This is done at your own risk, but ive done a very good number of them on all makes and many models with never a problem.
On that same page, the very first file listing is the one that you would need.
02-11-2009BIOSACPI Flash BIOS version 1.60 for Satellite A70/A75 (PSA70U)(v1.60; 02-06-2009; 3.53M)
you will also need an external USB floppy drive.
If you want to undertake this, post back in here and i would be happy to help you with the procedure

If this has helped you, please dont forget to take the time to rate, that gives us the satisfaction that a problem was solved

Could be you got a bad replacement battery. Are you able to try the battery in a different laptop that uses it? Also check the power adapter. Another is check the connectors in the battery bay and see if any are corroded or damaged..

I have a Compaq 6720s Laptop, and I have plugged in not charging, and when unplugged despite saying 89% charged, turns off after one minute and thirty seconds

I suggest your battery has outlived it's usefulness. Perhaps you can get an even better one from an internet retail place. I've bought larger ones for various laptops and never had one fail prematurely.

Try updating the BIOS from the Manufacturer's website

Try the same battery in another laptop of the similar kind and check if it charges. If yes then the problem is with Main board.

If not then the battery needs to be replaced.

Battery fully charged but still shutting down when disconnected from mains

Find another battery it says like the one you have is faulty. If you try another known good battery and that fails just like yours then try a know good ac adaptor. If that fails, then its a problem with the motherboard not charging batteries properly but it really does sound like a faulty battery from my experience.
