After booting the system - approximately 5-7 minutes later, the system freezes up. Whether I am online, or offline, or even if I boot the system and do nothing. At that point, the system seizes up, and must be manually powered off, in order to try to reboot. My virus definitions are up to date, but am unable to run a full system scan, due to the freeze up.

I would recommend first that you run adaware from www.lavasoft.com and spybot from www.safer-networking.org and check for spyware.
i would then try downloading a trial version of eset from www.eset.com
if that does not find anything, i would then try to take the hard drive out and use it as a second drive on a desktop computer (if its not a sata drive, you will need to buy a 3 1/2 to 2 1/4 inch hard drive converter connector) and run the spyware and virus scanner and have it scan the data drive.
it should solve the problem.
p.s. you might have some corrupted drivers, i would start with the VGA drivers.
