SOURCE: Blank Screen and blinking light
I was using my laptop when it suddenly froze. Tried ctl/alt/del but
nothing happened. So I powered down. When I tried to power it back
up, the power light comes on, the lock lights blink twice, the fan
powers up then down, and the dvd drive clicks on and off. Then
nothing--black screen. My laptop battery is nearly dead, so I am
always plugged in.
This seems like a common thing with the Inspirons, and here are some of the suggestions I tried:
I removed all power sources, held down power button for 30 sec to reset system and tried to boot up again--same issue
I unplugged the screen closed sensor, thinking the unit might be
thinking it was asleep (lid closed), because that what it acts like.
No luck.
Removed memory--and reset--nothing.
Replaced button battery on motherboard, now same problem.

The diagnostic Error is a False positive you can ignore the diag error as the LCD is functional. If the battery is not recognized in the BIOS or you get an warning the AC adapter is not recognized, then you may have either a damaged AC adapter sensing pin (Fine wire in middle of ac adapter connection to Laptop) or a problem with the charging unit on the motherboard.
If the sensing pin is damaged or the ac adpater is not sending the right signal to the system, the battery charger will not work. SO if you have another Dell D series AC adapter, you can try it 1st. If the battery is 18 mos to 2 years old, you might see if it is IDs in BIOS and if it indicates battery state. Also the battery should have a test button and 5 LEDs on it. If the 1st 3rd and 5th LED flash the battery is bad. ANy any come on solid, then it is a % of charge, each LED = 20%
If you end up replacing hardware, then it will most likely be in this order:
AC Adapter, Battery, Motherboard

Press Fn Key plus POWER key ans see if the diagnostics will start. If no go, then the system is likely in a No POST state.
You can check the warranty status here:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~ck=anavml
and no paperwork is needed to get warranty support, all you need is the express service code on the bottom and be a authorized user of the system.
