Acer Aspire 3610 laptop - Windows XP error

HELP! I am close to computer illiterate, and I have a big problem! My laptop will not boot up and I get a blackscreen error message that says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\CONFIG\\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair. ------------- So I inserted my Windows XP setup disc but I keep getting the same message. I did some internet research and discovered I should go into setup BIOS mode, and select bootup from CD-ROM. I found the BOOT screen but it won't allow me to select "boot from CD", it seems I can only boot from the hard-drive. So now what? If I can't access my CD, and I can't get into Windows to access my harddrive, am I screwed? PLEASE PLEASE HELP, anyone who understands this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a friend's Windows 98 SE or Windows ME computer, create a floppy "Startup disk". Insert in your pc floppy drive and turn on. If floppy drive was not accessed, then get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from floppy drive" is set prior to "boot from hard drive". Once at first screen, select "Boot with CD-ROM driver". Insert CD-ROM and initiate entire re-install of Windows. Windows may do some self-restarting. At first restart do this: get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from hard drive" is set prior to "boot from floppy drive".

Acer Aspire 3610

How far does it get in booting. Do you see the Windows screen with the side scrolling bar before it reboots. During the boot process, start hitting the F8 key once a second until it drops you into a menu where you can select to start in Windows with safe mode. If you cant get that far, hit the DEL key a few times a soon as you boot the computer to try to go into your BIOS. If you can get into either of these, I may be able to help you.

Factory settings?

Try this, if you are running xp i know it will work.

Start menu> All programs>Accessories>system tools>System restore.

This will restore your computer to factory and you won't loose any data. If you want to start fresh with nothing installed, install windows with the cd and choose fresh installation and follow the direcions.

Acer 3000 not loading

Hey,

firts put the original harddrives back in place :)
then you need to enter the 3000's bios If I remember right
thats done by pressing f2 or del in a acer. it should tell you what button is correct on the bootup screen.

Then you need to change the boot order to haveing the dvd/cd drive before the harddrive, since right now its booting strate from the harddrive.

Then you should be able to restore the operateing system with the disks that came with the laptop and or from a normal xp or vista cd/dvd.

good luck!
