I have a HP LJ 4700 printer set up to a network. It will print black but not colour

We've changed all of the toners including the black. We get no error messages. I've Run the Cartridge Disable diagnostic and put the black cartridge in to ever coloured spot and run a test page. It works fine. I then put the coloured toners in the black ran a test page each time and could see the colour fine. I am yet to contact IT to ask to run firmware. We were having the issue before we replaced the toners. The printer is out of service warranty. I have tried everything else I can find. Any solutions?

Hi I tried all of the above and no luck. I only realised yesterday that some computers linked to the printer via network can still print colour. But it seems strange that the printer itself won't. Our IT department has told us to buy a new printer. Not sure if there is a firmware issue. But not a lot I can do. Thanks for all your help.

SOURCE: Cartridge problem

the problem is that even if you dont use the color supplies they do have a life cycle clock, you could try reseating the cartridge but i doubt that will work. what needs to happen is that the chips need to be reset or replaced on the color cartridges, its cyan now soon it will be yellow and then magenta. you can 1) replace the cartridges with new ones orr 2) have a cartridge refill place replace the chips on them. they dont need to be refilled unless the toner from age and humidity became soild. what most people dont understand is that if all you print is black then dont buy a color laser printer. toner over time can become a soild chunk and ruin your cartridge. most laser cartridges have a 2 year shelf life thats seald in a air and water tight bag in open air the toner starts pulling in the humid air and starts to become soild, this can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few years.

SOURCE: HP 3310 - problem with black ink supply

I heard you can get the 3310 to do a pump up the tubes cycle but i don't know how to make it do it. Pressing the ok and cancel buttons when you power up didn't work for my machine. Which has too died a inkless black death!

SOURCE: hp officejet 6110 not printing with black ink

I think I know what is the problem. I refilled my black ink cartridge and it printed for a while, but at some point it just stopped working. The head wouldn't touch the paper. Initially I thought the printer had a problem, but then I discovered that the color cartridge still worked.I had a spare new cartridge so I changed it. Everything worked just fine afterwards. My hypothesis is that HP tracks an identifier in the cartridge and does NOT allow you to refill (I even think they simulate for the cartridge to be failing, but I still have to corroborate this). I think this is outrageous and illegal. Please let other people with the same problem know about it. So, the solution is to stop using HP products.

SOURCE: black ink does not print

i had the same problem. black stopped printing. i always used OFFICIAL HP cardridges, so this problem is not exclusive for refilled cardridges.

This solution (offered here) worked for me:
Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the 3310 off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and the turn it back on. You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate. Make sure you have new cartiges in the printer so that it can reset.

I wanted to stress that you should make sure that:
1) you keep the the buttons down untill it shuts off;
2) on restart you get a notification of service;
3) to turn it off again after service before you turn it on for actual use.

HP LJ 5500dn printer-replaced black toner crtrdg,w/OEM tnr crtrdge, recvd control error mssge 'clean fuser input',which we did according to online HP instructions, & another 'youtube'...

Hi Donna

It sounds like the machine still wants a new black toner, normally this message clean fuser input" clears whent he machine reconises a new Original non refilled cartridge being fitted, so it sounds like you have either a faulty cart or a non gen HP cart fitted like a aftermarket or refill. People often get confused that a cart they are using is OEM when in fact it is a OEM empty that has just been refilled or it isnt HP at all usally marked as "for use in HP" so please ensure we are in fact fitting real toners, if you fitted a HP one you would have to tear open the box it comes in.

If it was call I would unplug it from your pc, power it off then on, remove all your cartridges and ensure they are original HP, I'd remove the fuser and clean the discharge lamp area see HERE.
Id replace any consumable that look suss or was leaking. I test via the control panel ie menu/ information/ print supplies status. Can you get a status page out or does the error stop you?

If it still failed the first thing to do would be to replace black toner cart with another as I think your is faulty. If it is real HP then is a gaurantied item so take it back for replacement.

If a tec was their just 3 days ago it too should be covered, most companies like mine allow recall warranty on repair work on same fault if it occurs within 30 days or original call.

Here your user manual and a pic below of what it wants cleaned but mind you normally a new toner clears the message regardless, please note this error wasnt included in original machine realease it was a firmware update that added it so it may not be listed in early prints of manuals for your machine.

Let me know how you go the more info the better

Cheers

Steve

Cannot print in black because color cartidge is out of ink

There is a 'low toner' override in the menu system, but if this has NOT been set already, a 'flag' will be set on the chip on the cartridges that are low/empty.

The printer needs to 'see' cartridges that are usable, i.e. NOT empty, in order to function.

It is possible to replace just the chips on the colour cartridges, but then any colour printing quality could be compromised of course, as the colours will be low/empty. You would then be able to use the printer as if it were a mono laser, just changing the black cartridge when needed

Printer not printing black

The head may need to be removed and cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab or you can purchase a head cleaning kit with instructions. The toner sometimes needs replacement

HP CLJ 4700 empty display, no answer

When the display is light and printer is ready for printing but does not pass pages:
There are still jobs in the memory buffer of the printer.
This could be solved by pushing the oval select-button.

Notice:
1. Entering the oval select-button also activates the new control panel settings (when they have been changed).
2. Printer control panel settings could have been changed over a network cable: checking the settings is a next step when problems do
disappear.
