We have quite low water pressure. When the shower head is removed, the whistling noise goes away. The whistling also goes away if the Moen valve is set all the way to Hot or set all the way to cold. Also, when this was initially installed 8 years ago, we seem to have even less water pressure. Is this because of the posi-temp cartridge? If so, can I replace it with a standard cartridge? Your help is much appreciated!

Definitely try reversing the cartridge.

Did this unit come with water stops built into the faucet body? Some of the newer faucets have stops built in and they need to be turned on. Also if you aren't going to plumb the hot in, you will need to cap it off but it should run without it unless it has some sort of balance in it. I don't think so though.

There is a little "o" ring in the shower inlet that is designed to collapse as the pressure increases, limiting flow. You can safely remove this and then have un restricted flow.

When it was installed was there any copper sweating done? If so, the valve cartridge can get fried if not removed prior to the immense heat from a torch.

I'm not aware of any problems with non moen replacement parts being the cause for a water hammer problem. Start with the simplest and cheapest correction which is using a moen replacement cartridge. If the water hammer persists then you may have to install a water hammer arrester in the plumbing system. This is basically a shock absorber in the plumbing system to stop the effect of water hammer. An arrester will cost you around $10 to $15 at your local plumbing supply shop. If you are not comfortable soldering copper then you will want to hire a licensed plumber to complete the work for you.
I had the same type of problem with an older toilet in my house. It developed a water hammer when it shut off after filling the tank. I replaced the fill valve with a generic universal replacement for about $10 and it stopped. Again sometimes the simplest fix will work. Let me know how it works out.
If you have good pressure at the water faucet close to the shower and low at the shower then the shower valve needs rebuilt. If you have low pressure at all then start going down the line toward the water service coming into the house looking for where the low pressure starts in the distribution system and you should be able to isolate the problem.

It's really more of a loud screaching sound than a whistle. We used to be able to wiggle the diverter a tiny bit and the screaching would go away. Now no matter what we do, the noise will not go away. I cleaned and lubricated the diverter and also took apart and completely cleaned the handheld shower head. There is no screaching sound made if I totally remove the shower head or if I move the handle all the way to Hot only or all the way to Cold only. What I'm hearing and reading online, tells me it is probably the Moen #1222 cartridge insert??????What do you think?
