You are right the registry is corrupted. I did exactly what you said and the computer will not take the windows installlation cd. When it reaches to its final phase it stops.

What is the Messenger that you downloaded? If it's third-party not even from Microsoft or Yahoo then you will encounter problems. So what you can do is run a Windows Recovery instead and see if it will boot normally. If it doesn't then what you can do is turn it off completely wait 30 seconds for it to cool down and then turn it back on. See if it passes the Windows Welcome Screen and allows you to boot right into the system.

1. Turn off the system completely. Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.
2. Press F8 and then from the menu select: "Last known good configuration from the menu", then all you do is let it use then it should boot normally.

3. If you have the CD to Windows XP Home/Pro then insert it but don't press anything until it boots into Windows normally.

Note: It could just be that while it was installing the software it was rewriting the registry and a failure occurred while it was writing. Sometimes third-party software is suspected to make changes to the OS so it would change things at the sametime.

4. Keep the CD in there don't take it out until it allows full activation of Windows to show in front of your screen.

I hope these steps work out for you and please keep me updated as well.

Registry looks to be corrupted.

As you boot the computer, press F8. You'll get the boot menu. Select 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Now the computer should be able to get into Safe Mode.

Get on to internet, Start a free registry scan from

If this fails, you may need the Windows Installation Disk to fix it.

    1. Turn off the computer.

    2. After a few seconds power it on

    3. Start tapping F8 key continuously on the keyboard as it powers up.

    4. A boot manger/boot menu appears.

    5. Follow as I instructed earlier.

Take the computer to a local technician. Normally, dealing with registry corruption is not easy.

Go to Control Panel .Uninstall Yahoo Messanger(From ADD/Remove in Xp)..And also Check in Folder.....
Start > Computer >> Local drive (C) >> Program Files >> Yahoo >> Messenger. - The Messenger folder should have been deleted and not seen. If the Messenger folder is still visible - delete it.

Windows XP Media Center edition... get a ''Cannot Find Windows Messenger'' error when starting up media center... wouldn't bother me - but my son just got an XBox 360, and it cannot connect to the PC due...

This should a simple fix to enable Messenger if you have your XP disk handy.

Go to "Add/Remove programs"

You will see an add/remove windows components, or something similar.

If the Windows Messenger box is already ticked, untick it and OK it then exit out and go back to this.

Now Tick the box. It may ask you to insert your CD.

Once done, OK it again and restart your PC.

If this still causes issues, try downloading Windows Live Messenger (about 175MB) and run it directly from the website. Saving to yourPC has issues and often does not work.

I'm not really clued up with Xbox and other game boxes, so all I have done here is to activate Messenger in one format or another on you PC.
