similar story trying to fix friend's 5420. She had trashed Vista and lost any&all original discs. Well, who needs vista anyway...it's not one of M$'s better efforts. TRY THIS, download LinuxMint from a reliable source, burn a "live CD". put into drive, boot machine, during boot press "Alt"+"F12", select CD to boot from. See how it feels.
Wait couple minutes for boot to finish then manually click on tiny icon next to network icon to load wireless driver, (don't ask...), on bottom right of screen.
Learn some new stuff, toss some windows. enjoy.

There is no laptop on Acer site which matches your model. However, Extensa 5410 is listed. If you have the same model, you can download the drivers from the following link:
you need to download an updated driver for your acer 5420 or go to the website for the pro stick manufacturer and update the latest driver for their stick. start with your drivers and make sure you get the correct one for your model. this should resolve future issues with driver conflicts on removable media. which is the problem you are having.
