I just bought a emachines as well and i noticed when purchasing a new video card that it required a 450 watt power supply, so i went to check and see how much the one i had just purchased had and of course it was 250! that is soooo low, anywho, what i am sayin is if you think that you are going to add any drives or a after market vid card then yes you need to replace the powersupply in ur emachines with at least a 500 watt, they are like 50 to 100 dollars at tigerdirect

How can you check a computer power supply. (Emachines T1742) Shouldn't you be able to do that with a volt/amp meter? Do you have to short two connector pins to simulate the computer on-off switch?

In order to turn it on if the motherboard wont do it yes, you have to short out the green and a black wire for it to turn on. Volt meter is handy to check for proper voltages: 12v, 5v, 3.3v, also should be test when the computer is under full load. It is also recommened to check for bad capictors on all computer compentents including the power supply. Usually on store bought computers the power supply starts to give out, and the caps buldge, and if its left unfixed it causes caps in other places to go out. If there are caps bulding on the power supply and/or other stuff, buy new capictors of the same voltage and same or slightly higher UF rating, I recommend Rubycon or Nichon from badcaps.net. Hope this helped.

I'm trying to "rebuild" an old desktop computer of mine just to play and learn new things. It's an Emachines T2625 . Everything is in working order, but the integrated video seems to have went bad... I...

just start over and buy a motherboard and processor and memory and plug your stuff into it. you will need an operating system because the emachines operating system only workes with an emachines motherboard. emachines is the cheap brand from gateway and i have had nothing but trouble with those machines. Hope this helps and good luck

My t2460 emachine won't power up the power box works it just won't turn on .

Emachines don't last long. Even though the power supply turns on it still could be bad.
It is probably the motherboard. Best to buy a new computer. Pull the hard drive from the old one and set it up as slave on the new PC so you can transfer all your old files.

Will not power up

This is a common problem with Emachine motherboards, the problem is the power supply is a best tech and allows voltage surges to the motherboard which fries it too. If available you usually have to replace both the power supply and motherboard. I do not know what exactly goes bad on the motherboard but I have replaced many emachine power supplies and motherboards. The motherboard kit which used to be available from Emachines included a power supply and no warranty if you didn't change the power supply. They knew they had a problem.

Emachine t2642 power supply

Apparently this model has a bad motherboard, which manifests as a power warning and eventually a refusal to boot up. You can replace the power supply (as far as I know, any generic one 250-watt or better will work) but it's unlikely to help. You can buy a new motherboard (and new power supply, if you want to) direct from eMachines, but it's also likely to fail pretty soon. Your best bet is to get a new computer (NOT an eMachines one) and put your hard drive in as a slave so you can get your data off.

W2646 crapped out

Some eMachines computers (like many from Dell) use a non-standard pin out for their power supplies, so if you try a standard ATX power supply it may not function.

However, in my experience it IS likely to be the motherboard. Luckly I have been able to replace quite a few of the eMachines mobos with a standard mATX mobo, since you can probably remove the IO plate. You'd certainly want to replace the power supply when doing so.

Computer is an eMachine

Well Most Likely Your Problem Is A Bad Connection Of Power To The Hard Drive Or Motherboard Also You Should Check The IDE Or SATA Cable That Goes From The MotherBoard To The Hard Drive Is Securely Connected On Both Ends
