Try lithium batteries. Sometimes regular batteries even when new cannot run a digital camera.

I was told today my sensor is bad in my Cannon S1IS camera and it would take $130.00 to fix. I have also seen some sensor recalls on this model. What are my options?

Run away from whoever told you that it would cost you money to fix this problem. Canon should fix this for you for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Applicable cameras include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S230, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

S1IS black screen .. no image

If you have an S1 IS, this is likely a very different problem (although symptoms may be the same). This is more likely to be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Applicable cameras include:
A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S200, S230, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/300/400/430/500, IXY Digital 30/30a/200a/300a/D320/400/ 450/500

Low battery

Digital cameras are like miniature computers, constantly processing large amounts of data, their power requirements far exceed film based cameras and conventional batteries are simply not up for the task. I have seen plenty of times where someone has bought a brand new pack of cheap batteries which fail to even turn on a digital camera! You are best to spend your money on a set of rechargeable Ni MH batteries. They will pay themselves off many times over and will reduce unnecessary landfill. You can of course still buy disposable if its more convenient but you really do have to spend up on top of the range quality to get any good use out of them. Also be aware that cameras using only two batteries (such as the 560) are more demanding again on battery performance.

Try setting your camera to mass storage instead ptp.
Reinstall the software of canon. Also see if the camera is in transfer mode rather in shooting mode.
Check if your card is accidently locked somehow.
Always try to load original driver cd and software that came with the camera.

Cannon

go to the canon web site they have an advisory out on this I just got mine back actually they kept my S1 IS and sent me a new S5 IS because "they did not have the part and wanted to expedite my repair"

Here is another site I found when I encountered my problem
http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1164376280.html

I sent my camera in per Canons instructions, received an e-mail a few days later(1/9/08) confirming that they would repair it a few more days later (1/16/08)I received another e-mail confirming that it had been repaired and shipped. Today (1/17/08) I got it and to my very pleasant surprise the box contained a new S5 IS!!! I will be sending them a very nice THANK YOU for it after I post this.

PS: e-mail accepting repair 1/9/08
1/16/08 e-mail stating it shipped on 1/15/08,
received 1/17/08 via FED EX

Difficulty in retracting lens

it could be the battery is at the end of its life. try getting a new battery for it and trying agian. If this is not the case then it could be the camera has come to the end of its useful life (they are not built to last very long sadly) but try the battery and see what happens.
