My ps3 turns on and off ok, plays movies off the hard drive and will play ps3 games but has suddenly stopped playing movies ( dvd & blu ray ) it recognises the disc and goes to play it but the screen...

That is actually a poor conclusion. There are three different lasers, one for blu-ray, one DVD and one for CD games all in one holder inside. It certainly CAN be the laser. The description id the DVD/Blu-ray part is having focus problems. Contact Sony for a service center that can install a new drive (It needs to be calibrated on install)

Try this to play DVD movies on your PS2 if it wont play DVD movies.

If your PS2 works fine with Games and just wont play any DVD movies at all.Then you should try this trick to play movies on your PS2:

Turn on your PS2 without inserting any disc.
Menu screen will appear like:
Press the (triangle) Button to enter Version Information Menu that looks like
Highlight the Play Station Driver as above and again press (triangle).
New screen will appear like
Highlight the Disc Speed as above and press button,to enter Disc Speed Menu
And set it from Standard to "Fast".
After you set Disc Speed to Fast, Press and Hold Reset Button to turn off your console.
Then again Press and Hold Reset Button till the Blue Light turns on.
Remove the Reset Button and Press it again.

Be patient and wait till the movie plays itself.If your lens is good then it will play DVD in first go else try again till it PLAY your DVD movie.

The dvd portion of the blu-ray laser has gone out.

Can you still play PS3 games?

sounds like the lens servo my be ought , this is the small motor that ajust the lens between playing a game, movie, or blu-ray

Make sure u have enable dvd and blueray play back. go to setting and enable it. cant come up with the step by step from the top of my head but im pretty sure its under settings. hope this works

When you put in a blue ray movie the screen goes blank

Search the official playstation website for the latest update and download it to your desktop
Move the file from your desktop to an usb stick or flash card or whatever.
Plug it in your ps3 and update (Info on how to do that should be on the official PS website.)

if you can't play bluray movies then your bluray laser is broken. you will still be able to play games, because there are two different lasers.

try changing the dvd drive speed in the system configuration, it may be at standard, change it to fast

What you're seeing is the menu. You need to put the disc in the console, or the disc is dirty and will not play, so it then automatically goes to the menu.

If this is an issue you have always had (meaning you just started using the system) it may be a resolution problem. If your PS3 is set to display movies or games in a resolution your TV can't handle, you'll get issues like this. Go into your video settings in the bar and check to make sure you don't have it set for something your TV can't do. My TV, for example, won't do 720p.
