We are replacing microwave (that has oven-hood built-in) with like unit; existing stove-top has downdraft (center). Does replacement stove-top unit have to have downdraft? Conversely, could we get cook-top with downdraft and NOT have oven hood on new microwave (which would still be over the cook-top)? Thanks in advance for considering!
Stove fans of either kind are not required if your kitchen is large. However, you might still need one if it gets very cold in your area, or there is no window or exterior door nearby.
Addendum: Stove vents are actually not very efficient, but may prevent grime on kitchen surfaces, or fire spreading to upper cabinets. In recent years, hoods have become a design element. Virtually unknown in the u.s. are middraft, through-the-wall fans you could install in the back of your stove, if it is against an outside wall in a non-conspicuous place. But check the codes in your area for options.

We have a stove with no downdraft, and a microwave with a hood above it. It works just fine. I expect you could keep your downdraft and put a microwave without a hood above it, and that would also work. I don't think, however, you can buy an above the range mocrowave oven, that slides in on brackets, which will not have a hood.
