Hi, when I turn my camera on (green light on), the shutter remains closed, the lens inside - not possible to take pictures.... When I turn it off, shutter opens, lens comes out - but no more power, so I can't take any pictures either...... This has nothing to do with the battery power. It is a recent problem, I've had some happy 4 years with this camera without the slightest problems. I'm happy about any solution!
Try the Sony web site technical help. but I feel that there is a main board fault developed here- perhaps time for a new camera try the tech help first though
I had the same trouble. It's simple to solve: open the batterie when you switch on, and lens are in or reverse. Pierre Dardalhon
Hello I think Sony has done this intentionally. I have had 4 wonderful years with mine also. Then all of a sudden the lens will not open. If you put your ears to the lens you hear a grinding sound as if the gears are not meshing correctly...sad to say, I am afraid its time to get a new camera.....bummer!

Thank you for your fast answer! If no other suggestions come up the next days, I'll definitely try tech help!
Surprise!
I've send the camera to a special Sony repair service. They found nothing but: sent me new Sony rechargable batteries, as they usually don't work anymore after 4 years! And miracle miracle: the camera works perfectly again.... So to anybody having troubles with the DSC-P72, especially after 4 years: try new rechargables!
Thanks to everybody for comments!
