How deep is the well can you hear the pump working.or are you able to pull the pump up to inspect it.or can you place ahose down the well to be sure that water is down there, some pumps have a pressure sensor so when theres no water it switches of so as it does not opperate dry, because this will damage the seals in the pump, hoe this helps.

Re prime the pump. Make sure the suction line is completly flooded so it will take a good suction from the well.

What size cable are you using to provide the supply
Voltage is one thing current is another
Thin cables will not provide the current to run the motor in its proper environment and will cause it to get hot.
On the rating plate of the pump you will find a voltage and current requirement that will tell you what size cable you need for your area ie 110vac or 240vac
Also need to allow for the distance the pump is from the main supply , the longer the run the thicker the cable is the rule as there will be fall off in performance if the cable is not up to it.

Yes, most motors are thermally protected. It is usually bi-metallic, and resets itself.

SOURCE: I have a Flotec FP 4022-10 3/4 hp shallow well
If heating up, the motor thermal switch is opening to shut down the motor; this is by design. During the brief run time does it pump at all? It sounds as if there may be mechanical issues on the pump itself and the motor (from the extra draw) is heating up and shutting down. I'd look in to the pump to see if anything had failed within it.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom
