KitchenAid mixer speed surges high and low uncontrolably

When turned on any speed the mixer speeds fast and slow making it impossible to mix with any control.

  • Anonymous Nov 15, 2012

Tried baber boys suggestion of taking the back cover off and tightening the two top screws. Now the mixer does not surge at all. The only speed not working is the stir speed. Thank you for your help. Hopefully this will work for a while.

You can get the high speed back if you want to play with those three screws. there is a timing scheme for your mixer and it is set and adjusted by manipulating those 3 screws. The bottom center screw is for speeds 6 8 and 10. The best choice is to replace this switch, about $10 bucks on ebay.

sorry i misread the problem, if you want the stir speed back you will have to adjust the two top screws by unscrewing them until the mixer starts turning on stir setting, the rotation speed should be 60 revolutions per minute and by adjusting those two top screws you can acheive that.

remove the back cover, and try tightening the two (on top) adjustment screws.  that might help but no guarantees!

SOURCE: Kitchenaid K5A mixer 10 speed only runs on fast, no slow speed

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

SOURCE: kitchenaid mixer speed

I would recommend that you first check the Hall Effect sensor which determines the mixer’s speed.  I had this exact problem and I actually went out and bought another Hall sensor for about $13.  I replaced the original sensor and made sure that the connection between the sensor and control board was nice and snug. My mixer worked as good as new! But I was curious to know if my original sensor was defective, so I put it back in mixer and again made sure all of the connections were snug and tight. Guess what?  My original sensor also made my mixer work!  There was nothing wrong with the original Hall Effect sensor except that the connection between the control board and sensor was not tight--unfortunately I didn't check the connection before I decided to buy another sensor. My guess is that the connection between the control board and the sensor probably loosens or comes undone over time from use and vibrations. To fix your problem:
1.  Download the mixer parts and diagrams from the Kitchenaid website to see what the Hall Effect sensor looks like. BTW the part number is 9703312.

2.  You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to open up the mixer gear case cover.
3.  Make sure that the connection between the control board and sensor is absolutely tight and snug.
4.  Also, make sure that the orientation of the sensor is correct.  It's difficult to tell which way the sensor should be connected because the control board has three prongs and the sensor can attach facing up or down. After you've made the connection, run the mixer. If it still doesn't work, disconnect the sensor, reconnect it with the prongs facing the opposite direction and try it again.  I actually found the right sensor orientation through a little trial and error.  But by going through this trial and error, I also had my Eureka moment when I realized that the original sensor probably would also work if it were reconnected with correct orientation.
5.  This whole process probably takes about 10-15 minutes to perform.
6.  Finally, use your common sense and make sure to unplug the mixer before checking, connecting or disconnecting anything.

My kg25h7x varies the mixing speed on its own

The Kitchenaid uses a centrifugal switch to maintain a constant speed. This must be sticking to cause this. You mixer will need to be disassembled and inspected.

My 325 watt, 5 quart artisan stand mixer won't work on "stir" speed. All other speeds work fine, but when I put the switch on stir, I just hear the motor whining like it's trying to work, but...

By not working to mean that the planetary gear wont move? or does it just make a weird noise when it is on a low setting? If the gear is completely stripped the unit shouldn't run on any speed regardless if there is mixture in the bowl or not. Since I can't see the mixer I would say that there might be a slight tear in the gear which would only allow the mixer to get stuck on a slow speed where as on a high speed it is running fast enough to skip that particular tooth. I understand that the mixer is brand new but when it comes to mixers you can strip a gear right out of the box depending on the consistency of the batter you are mixing. If the machine is under a year old it is under warranty and you are allowed free service by an authorized repair center in your area.

When I turn on my Kitchenaid mixer at any speed, it ramps up to high speed and then shuts down after maybe 30 seconds.

You need a reputable repairman. My gears were stripped after trying to mix a very thick dough. It would only work on high speed. After it was repaired.... I still use it, all the speeds work, and that has been 15 years ago. My mixer was at least 8 years old at the time of the "stripping".

I have a Hobart KitchenAid Mixer Model K45SS and it runs fast on low (Surges speeds up and down)what is causing this problem

Hello Mayfix,

The problem with your mixer is the speed control switch, this switch is located at the back of the unit. It is usually black and has all of the wires coming into it, the Item # 1394070 and cost $27.95 it can be located at RepairClinic.com he is a link
http://www.repairclinic.com/Kitchenaid-Switch-Parts?z=100&gclid=CKSD5NriuKcCFUVqKgodIE2b_g

You will have to adjust after you install you will adjust the two screws at the top of the switch while the machine is running inorder to make sure that you are getting all the speeds. Be careful as there is a possibility of electrical shock if you touch the wronge thing.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Kitchenaid artisan mixer does not turn the blade at low speeds

If it is the worm gear then the planetary will stop turning when there is a load on the paddle but the motor will continue to run at the speed you set it at. I'd be checking the carbon brushes, checking that the field assembly has not loosened up a bit and then I would see if the speed control plate adjustment screws are loose. I'd then reset the speed and see if it stays as it should be.

Loud and throws flour all over

Do you find the motor running too fast at the lowest setting? Then you need to bring it to someone to adjust the low speed setting. If you are preparing double batches you are over loading the mixer and/or using too fast a speed setting to mix. Don't try to double recipes just because the bowl can handle the volume, the motor cannot and will not last very long if stressed mixing dough frequently.
