Recap: last week machine would not agitate with motor running. Worked after some cleaning, no specific repair. This week machine would not spin, just slightly without real torque (Maytag Performa PAV2300)
I took the transmission out and noticed that I can turn the lower shaft cw (with the thrust bearing assy) and the upper shaft goes through the agitation movements. When I turn the lower - the drive shaft- ccw the upper shaft would not rotate. You feel a break-like resistance when turning the lower shaft.
What could that be ?

If your Maytag washing machine is agitating during the spin cycle, it could be due to a few different issues. Here are some possible causes:
Defective Transmission: The transmission in the washing machine is responsible for shifting the agitator and the drum between the spin and agitation cycles. If the transmission is defective, it may not be able to engage or disengage the agitator properly, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
Worn Drive Belt: The drive belt connects the motor to the transmission and helps to control the speed and direction of the agitator and drum. If the belt is worn or damaged, it may not be able to properly control the agitator, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
Malfunctioning Clutch: The clutch in the washing machine helps to regulate the spin and agitation cycles. If the clutch is not functioning properly, it may not be able to disengage the agitator during the spin cycle, causing it to spin along with the drum.
Faulty Timer: The timer controls the various cycles and functions of the washing machine, including the spin and agitation cycles. If the timer is faulty, it may not be able to properly sequence the cycles, causing the agitator to spin during the spin cycle.
It's best to have a professional technician inspect and diagnose the issue to determine the exact cause and the necessary repairs.
if this is a two piece agitator,it should behave like a ratchet turn freely clockwise and catch counter clockwise if it doesn't catch the agitator "dogs " are shot this is a verry inexpencive repair
Hi, The problem might be due to the motor is trying to run and can't or does'nt start or the motor is running but the belt broke and so it is not transfering any power. You will need to take a look and see which is the case. Motors and belts can be challenging to repair so be warned if you are attempting the fix yourself. It does depend on the machine some are harder than others....
"Does not agitate" sounds like a broken or worn drive belt. "Does not drain" sounds like a broken or worn pump belt. Since it is unlikely that both belts are bad, I suspect that the next common link, the drive motor, is bad, i.e. your drive motor is either defective or not getting power during the agitate and spin cycles. The primary symptom for a non-operating drive motor should be obvious, i.e., the machine just doesn't run after the wash fill, and it doesn't empty when the timer advances to the spin/drain cycle. If the drive motor does sound like its running, I would then inspect both belts and drive motor pulley for proper operation.
sounds like the motor control board is bad. you could test the motor to see if it ohms out ok, the diagram has the readings. The diagram should be on the side panel (inside the cabinet) on the lt side in a brown envelope.
I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps
