Samsung technician said that the main board is the problem. Quoted about $350 for replacement. Easy swap if I could only find one. Where can I buy a BN97-00964 mainboard.

Thanks. My google search turned up a few on eBay, but all were sold. So I then tried to search within eBay . . . no luck. Is there a substitute board?

Hello: The problem is on the power supply, there are two capacitors on the power supply near the plug that goes to the mainboard, these caps will look swollen at the top on them compared to the other capacitors in the circuit, if you know how to unsolder and resolder parts then this is a simple fix. The value of the capacitors on the board are 1000uf rated at 10 Volts, replace them with 1000uf rated at 16 Volts instead so this will not happen again. You can find them at any local electronics parts store, (Radio Shack) for instance..There will be two of them that look puffy at the top,they should all be flat so spotting them should be very easy...

If you contact a Sony Authorised Service Centre, then you will be advised on price and availability otherwise ebay may have a working Second Hand board.
As boards don't "fail" they are not normally available from the manufacturer, components are usually available and with lightning damage, it may be an ongoing problem.

This symptom indicated the following fault :
1. No picture - affected parts is the ballast and its lamp. You have check and ensure connectors attached from the ballast to the lamp. Check for bad solder joints in the ballast board.
2. Chartreuse plaid picture - affected parts is the convergence board. Check for bad solder joints/fuse in this board. If symptom persist after re-soldering in the board, replaced the IC's and some resistor around. You may also replaced the board but it is not available at ebay.com and shopjimmy.com. Contact your local Samsung service center if you can place an order for it.
If you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't do the job yourself I would advice you to look for a qualified technician to isolate the problem.
