Sounds like it's running but no heat

I burnt bagels by severely overcooking, probably set timer too long. First notice was the smoke detector going off. Oven had terrible smoke smell so I disconnected it, took the cover off, and cleaned the fan housing, surrounding parts, and the shell using wet soapy washcloth. I avoided getting anything electrical wet. I tipped the oven on its back and side to get to all the areas. Everything was reassembled in reverse order of being taken apart. The next day when I plugged it in and ran it everything sounded fine but a cup of water did not warm up. Meanwhile, the time display set time ok but there is a dim extra digit, "8" showing to the left of the time digits. The subscript lower left of center in this time display area always shows "cook". The countdown timer works fine but no cooking action. When it counts down, the last "second" digit shows up faintly to the left of the cook time remaining digits. Did turning the oven on its side and back offend the electronics? Could I have disorientated the Magnetron? Is there something on the display panel I can reset? Is there any way to get fault codes with this control panel or is that too complicated for a microwave? The owners manual is no help. Any advice will be appreciated. If I can get it to work I will use the vinegar boiling water to try to get rid of the residual smell. Thanks.

I found out the KitchenAid has a Whirlpool clone which appears to be identical and costs only a few dollars more than a service call before parts. So the offending appliance has been replaced. It is now out in the garage awaiting further attention....

I am surprised at the difference in price for what appears to be the same item with a different brand name on it. It heated up my coffee just fine this morning. Thanks for your help.

Those symptoms are what I would expect when the controller or keypad gets wet. Tipping it is not an issue, unless that allowed the water to run into the controls more than just the wet soapy washcloth did. You may get lucky - it may dry out by itself in a few days. If not, and if careful targeting drying doesn't fix it, it will need a new keypad or controller.

Food fire food overcooked and smoked in microwave bad odor and now the food is gone but the smoke odor is left. how do I get rid of the smell now. microwave itself is unharmed thank you, hank

You should be able to get a cleaner spray suitable for use in microwaves. Give the insides a good spray and a good clean, it should take it away. Make certain there is no burnt deposits anywhere.

How to make rice

Cover with the lid and turn the heat down to its lowest setting. Leave it alone - once the lid is on, set the timer and go away! If you lift the lid and let the steam out you can slow down the cooking process, and rice should always be cooked as briefly as possible. Give white rice 15 minutes and brown rice 40 and use a timer - overcooking is what spoils rice. The best way to test if it is cooked is simply to bite a grain. Another way is to tilt the pan and, if liquid collects at the edge, it will need a couple more minutes' cooking.

There is a burning smell and outside of freezer compartment top and side are hot to the touch . Even though everything seems to be working. I have since unplugged the unit. This problem was first noticed...

This sounds as if the defrost is stuck on. This could be due to a failed defrost timer or
failure of the defrost termination thermostat in combination with the defrost timer stuck.
I would replace both at the same time. Some disagree on this, but if the contacts are
burnt in the defrost timer due to power surges, then the termination thermostat contacts
may also be burnt.

My KitchenAid microwave oven's model number is KCMS185JSS-4. Manufacture date is July 2005. It's been working fine until today, with an occasional glitch in the digital readout... sometimes the letters...

Either your high voltage rectifier or magnetron (or both) has failed.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

My GE doesn't have a Demo mode but say we have a power failure. It won't let me use it until I set the clock.

Try that and see if it helps

Overcooked potato overcooked the microwave

The magnetron probably overheated, blowing the thermal cutout / thermal fuse / thermostat mounted on it.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety and
disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Strange sound - seems to cook too hot?

It sounds like either your inverter is producing too high a voltage, or your magnetron may be damaged, causing it to overcook. In either case, it definitely needs professional attention. There are very high voltages involved. Since it's out of warranty, the repair charges would likely run about $75-90 labor for in-home service (less if you carry it in) and about $40-75 for parts depending on which is bad. If you run into a technician who can repair the inverter instead of just swapping it, you might save a bit.
