Choosing a home generator to use in the event of outages

You need to ask yourself a few questions - do you want life to continue as normal during an outage or are you willing to cover essentials only and enjoy the romance of an outage?

Are you willing to hook up, fuel and start a generator when needed or prefer to sit back and wait for the lights to come on automatically?

How many power outages do you have, how long do they usually last, how close are your neighbours and most importantly what is your budget?

A far eastern petrol powered generator can be fairly inexpensive and be ok for occasional short-run use. Noise levels are higher and they aren't really smooth and they aren't really computer safe. At around 3 Kva they will provide lighting and keep the fridge and freezer ticking over and maybe some tv.

A genuine Honda powered or similar generator is smoother, quieter, longer lasting and a little more frugal with fuel and you can choose from a host of ultra-quiet portables or site generator sets. Many of the former are computer safe without additional circuitry.

The ultimate is a diesel powered generator that is a permanent installation and is wired into the supply and starts automatically whenever there is an outage and will be happy to run for weeks if necessary. These range from big single cylinder engines providing 3Kva to models that need a house to live in and could supply a small housing estate.
The best source of these is secondhand from larger shops, factories or hospitals as they update their old equipment.

Sony CDP-CX450 Cd Player

Hi,

As in most current devices, absence of power (as in shortages/outages) simulates a reset. The reset reverts the unit back to factory defaults which of course does not have user configurations and settings.

A workaround perhaps would be with the use of a UPS as those used in computer systems.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a Netgear WNR2000 v4 router. We recently had a power outage.Power came back on in 5 seconds. The cable modem is fine, however the router ONLY shows me a solid green light for power, nothing else.

I would just do the reset, this should allow you to access at factory defaults. (I hold button in for 10 sec).

A solid green (power?) light is good
LAN ports should only light if connected
WiFi port should light if set to active

Frigidaire GLHS269ZCB4 after power outage Freezer not cooling fridge warmer hear the fan click and short cycle

Hello Wayne, thank you for allowing me to assist you. Was the freezer unplugged during the power outage? If it was, here are some simple troubleshooting steps you need to take:

It is best to unplug the unit and wait for the power to come back on.

Next, turn the control to off (or digital display), plug the unit in and reset control to factory-suggested setting.

Do not open freezer door unnecessarily if freezer is off for several hours. Make sure the refrigerator plug is tightly pushed into electrical outlet and not plugged into a GFI.

If your unit has no power and it is not due to a power outage, check the following:

Verify that the temperature control is set to the OFF position.
Set temperature controls to proper setting suggested by your owner's guide; or set to the halfway point and adjust it up or down as needed.

If these basic troubleshooting tips prove ineffective, the power loss may have possibly caused a communication problem with the control board, temperature control or wiring harness. At this point, I would recommend having a service technician to diagnose the problem before investing in unnecessary parts.

My UPS does not start

I'm guessing that during the power outage, the ups battery completely discharged. Now it will take about 14-15hrs to recharge it.It will not support any devices until it is fully charged. Remove all load devices and let the battery restore to full charge before re-connecting the devices. If the battery does not recover, it needs to be replaced.

Stuck at 288 degrees

NO PARTS REQUIRED!!! DON'T PAY FOR A SERVICE CALL!!!

After a power outage, my wife's grandmother said she could no longer set her over to 300, 400, 450, whatever..

I went over to troubleshoot.

I couldn't figure out why everything seemed functional and why I couldn't set the over to higher than 288 (and thought, that's a rather odd number)... until I realized that that 288 degrees C = 550 degrees F which is the max the oven can do.

The power outage reset the computed back to celcius instead of fahrenheit.

Save them a ton of money... cause this could have been an easy cash grab to some cook out there.

Cannot access the internet

try this :

1. it seems that the power outrage had caused your wireless settings to be restored to its factory settings .... so there is a need to reconfigure it again ...

"
the settings that are saved to my computer do not match" --- this usually pertains to the network settings saved on your laptop, if it is vista you must delete the old profile,it also applies for xp OS ....

VISTA :
>network and sharing center
> manage wireless connections
>under networks you can view or modify, highlight the old profile then remove

XP :
>netowrk connections
> right click on wireless network connection and go to properties
>click on wireless tab
>under preferred networks (box in the middle) highlight then remove

2. to check this do ipconfig on the cmd line
•check the default gateway if it is still 192.168.1.1 or 2.1 ( the default gateway is the rtr's address)
•open your browser, then type the rtrs ip
• leave the username blank, password is admin ( small caps)
• then you are in the set up page
• check the wireless tab, and very the ssid if it is still or the name of your network which you used to connect to ...
• just save the settings if you want to make changes

****** very impt : while doing this changes, your main pc or dsktop pc must be hardwired to the router ,, never make changes wirelessly coz the connection is very instable you will be kicked of everytime ..... ***********

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Ups troubles

What is happening here is you are transferring load to battery during a power outage but on return of Line Power the UPS is not smoothly transferring back to Normal mode. As a result you are basically turning off your computer. Two options... shut down your computer orderly during an outage or buy a new UPS.
