Zoom lens will not completely come out

When turning on the camera, the zoom lens will not completely come all the way out. I have to manually zoom the lens to make the screen clear and the lens come out. Has not been damaged, and lenses are not loose.

Sorry, but salt water immersion is effectively just as destructive to your camera and lens as if they had been crushed or burnt. If the body and lens were immersed in seawater then they are complete write-offs as they will be completely beyond economic repair.

Can you use the twist-barrell zoom lens on a Sony DSLR camera (or any DSLR) when the camera is set to auto-focus? I've been told that this damages the gears in the lens if you do. Thanks for your help.

You can zoom completely independent of the focus.

Some lenses immediately override the autofocus when it senses you turning the manual focus ring. Other lenses don't, and you can damage the lens by forcing it. It depends on the lens, so you'll have to consult the documentation for the specific lens.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct the problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Hi.

If you try turning on the camera with the lens cap on, you may get zoom error. Ensure that you are removing the lens cap before turning on the camera.

If the autofocus ring is held while taking the picture, or operating the lens this will also cause the Zoom error message coming up.

If that is not the problem, then the lens has troubles extending. This may happen because of dust stuck in lens mechanism, or because of a mechanical fault concerning the lens.
Any cause preventing lens from full extention or retraction will trigger zoom error.

Here a basic manual in PDF format.

Hi,
The error "Turn off the power and on again" shows when the zoom motor start malfunction, If you want to repair by yourself and have experience then change the optical zoom motor it will reduce your cost. Otherwise you can change complete lens block assembly, both part and description is given below for your help and convenience:

Part No. Description
1-788-363-11 OPTICS UNIT (ED13A) (complete lens block assy)

2-673-648-01 ZOOM MOTOR UNIT

You can contact any expert or Sony Service Center to change the above said part and your camera work fine again.
