Hi there if cable has been inspected and proofs to be fine , Then do check if the van has been fitted with a electronic speedometer normally the problem points to speedometer drivegear unit mounted on gearbox could have a possible wiring or component fault. The instrument cluster on this type of van is not normally problematic '.
You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working. The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.
I think it may be an electrical issue but I think it's just a fuse. There are 2 fuses I would check. One of them is a 15 amp fuse inside the fuse panel inside the vehicle (see fuse layout below) and the other is a 40 amp fuse in the fuse panel under the hood of the vehicle in the engine compartment (see other picture below). I marked the fuses to check and hope this is the problem.
A 1981 model will still have a mechanical speedometer. In this case the cable is probably broken. It is driven from the front wheel and runs into the underside of the instrument cowl.
There is a speed sensor for the transmission inside the speedometer gauge. if the speedometer cable is broken the hold light will blink. indicating a trans malfunction code and the transmission will not work properly. do not drive too long without a speedometer cable.
