My 26 inch LG LCD tv has started to now switch on, show a picture fir about 5 seconds then picture goes and black screen. The tv is about 5 yrs old, so not sure if its worth spending money on?
The inverter needs replacement. You should be able to get one from www.tvrepairworld.com

I had this problem on my 42" Philips. Just got it yesterday and worked fine on the tv stand. As soon as I mounted the TV to the wall via wall mount system, I had the exact same issue you did. Figured it out today.
The wall mount was putting pressure against the center of the back of the tv (tv set had a slightly rounded back plate, and the mount was a flat plate). As soon as I put spacers (part of the wall mount hardware set) between the wall mount braket and the tv so there was no contact except at the mounting holes, the tv worked fine.
My theory is the pressure pushed the tv back plate against some board components which caused them to overheat (no air flow); or put pressure on internal connectors. I dont know.
Hope this helps, may not apply to your situation.
SOURCE: LG Flat Screen TV has no picture, but sound
The times my TV at home has done this it is because I'm tuned to an HD source and my TV doesn't have HD. Or vice-versa, I tune to a regular channel and I have the TV set to HD.
If you have NO picture, like the channel number or volume bar don't appear, then this isn't the problem at all.
I would say check the Video (Yellow) cable in the back, or try setting up and playing a DVD and see what happens. maybe cycle through video modes, Digital etc.
If none of this helps, comment on the post and we can exchange more information.
Good luck!

While you have sound, take a flashlight and shine it on the screen, look very close and see if you can see a dark video image.
Let me know what you see.

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc. Look for 5vdc, 12vdc, and 24dvc.
