Harmon/Kardon AVR 146 wont stay on when hit power

You need Audio/Video Cables. Connect one end at TV Audio Out and other end to Amplifiers's Line In. It will work. I am sharing manuals for your help.

Possible blown fuse inside unit, unplug and remove the top cover
fuse should be near the power board and transformer. replace with exact fuse, "Never remove covers with the unit plugged in" Always wait 4 or 5 minutes after unplugging to remove the cover.Replace cover before plugging unit back in.

I would try disconnecting the speakers, then turn it on. If protect still shows with no speakers connected, then it needs to go to the repair shop- Might be a blown power transistor.

check to see if there is a reset switch inside on transformer bd. could be dirty. clean with contact cleaner.

First of all, if you have just been powering up with the remote, try pushing the actual button on the unit. From owning a HK receiver, I found out that if the power switch is out, it will not turn on from the remote. Duh moment when I discovered this.
It also might be an internal fuse or circuit breaker that is shorted or tripped. If there is not an outside breaker or fuse, send this to a repair person. Sometimes there are capacitors in the power amp circuit that can hold a lot of voltage for a good length of time. You could get shocked. So, you might want to let the repairman handle this. Otherwise check for an outside breaker or fuse, and replace if needed.
