I have a ten year Whirlpool side by side. It will cool through one cycle and when it shut off the compressor after reaching cool temp selected it will not turn the compressor back on for the next cool down cycle. If I run the temp know up and down a couple of times it will start up and do one cycle then not start up again as the temp increased!!

Most of the time on a whirlpool the problem is the relay on the compressor sometimes called the start device. I would replace that first. If you need help finding the part let me know. I will need the complete model # from the sticker inside the fridge section. You can look it up with diagrams at http://www3.sears.com/.

if the fan in the freezer is running go to the compressor and see if you have 120 volts ac to the compressor relay, normally a white and red wire will be connected to the relay,
if you have 120 volts to the relay, remove the relay and if it is white shake it if you hear a rattle in the relay it has a set of burnt contacts in it and will have to be replaced if you have 120 to the relay and no rattle in the relay then a compressor problem
if no 120 to the relay check the cold control, the defrost timer
I WOULD CHECK THE COMPRESSOR RELAY FIRST

Defrost unit completely. You're frosting up. Then, avoid leaving the door open, leaving liquids and food uncovered. Clean condenser coils. If it happens again, you need refrigerant.

most new fridges have a self defrost mode once or twice a day because the coils ice up if it collects alot of moisture. it shuts the compressor down and turns on a heat coil to defrost (which can take up to a half an hour). usually on a timer that is adjustable.
