Emachine t5230 cpu fan too fast

Wanted to swap in new video card for pci-express to get s-video, decided to clean dust out of computer cabinet, removed cpu not knowing what I was doing, did not know cpu chip could be removed from heat sink, tried to get chip back in grid of holes with heat sink still on, bent a couple of pins, thought it was in place, powered up, cpu was not in place so windows did not start and fan ran on high speed - took it to a technician, he replaced video card, cpu, and power supply, new cpu fan is very loud, bios reports that cpu is 22 degrees C but says cpu fan is 0 rpm, downloaded emachines t5230 bios and saved to disk to try to get new default values for bios but only 5 of 7 files of bios pack burn to CD, tried several times with no luck, modest intention and now a mess

    Thanks, Mark

I checked but the fan is plugged into the board. Any other suggestions?

  • orinzelenak Jan 04, 2009

Thanks for replying. My next stupid question is how do I determine which board I have? I did discover that the fan was plugged into the board at the PWR FAN set of pins. I moved it to the CPU FAN set of pins. No change in the 5100+ RPM but BIOS now registers a speed for CPU fan and 0 for PWR fan. I gently touched the running fan's magnetic center to slow it down and watched the BIOS give a real time report of the RPM dropping.

Also, the new CPU is AM2 ALTHON 64X2 5000 DUAL CORE 2.6GHZ (SOCKET AM@/940 PIN) OEM CPU. Can I just use a slower fan. The computer is not for gaming. I mainly research / browse on line and want to be able to watch some youtube videos on my TV - hence the s-video card (which I tested 10 minutes ago and got no output to a TV which I know has working S-video input. AArrggh!)

Motherboard is K2MCP6IP /V. My lay understanding at this point is that either I could upgrade to a quieter fan that will still achieve sufficient cooling (if I can find one) or perhaps a 4 pin fan that will allow some sort of automatic speed control. I believe the processor supports Cool 'NQuiet technology but I did not see this motherboard listed as one that supports this. I tried using Speedfan freeware but it did not change the speed of the fan.

    Thanks again for your help.

Hi orinzelenak,

This may seem like to simple, but try checking to see if the technician plugged the fan power supply into the correct pin for it. It sounds like the fan is plugged into a external plug directly from the power supply and not into the board, which would control the fan speed for you. Give a look, and maybe it's just that simple.

Good Luck

Mark

Do you have the NBB18EM or uATX motherboard?

Ok, Well at least your making progress. If the CPU is reading a speed, then perhaps (and I don't know if eMachine's Bios offers this) bios has a quick mode that you can initiate. Usually if the bios (I'm assuming) is reading the speed, then it probablly has a mechanism that can control the speed of the fan. It slows it down when the CPU's not in heavy use, and speeds it up when needed. See if it has anything like that?

For my question on the motherboard, it should be stamped on the board, sometime in between the ide buses. Those are the slots that you can add additional cards on to the machine. If it's not their, try looking around the edge of the board. Unfortunely, eMachine has the worse support, unless you pay for it. Those dogs!. But the boards they use are not as common as some mfg's. But do this, go to this link HERE, which happens to be the same board as the uATX board and click on the items on the left and compare them to your board. If you find any differences then you have the NBB18EM board.

And let me know, from this point once we determine the board, I can help you with the BIOS problems, and the fan.

    Thanks

    Mark

At this point you can download the correct bios from eMachine, which have Cool'nQuiet on it. HERE And yes you can get Lantec or Aero Cool/Quiet fan that have speed switches to make it quieter. Best of Luck of to You , and Have a Great New Year!

Computer does not start. CPU fan tries to move and stops

your processor is overheating. if you know how to open your cpu, that would do the trick. you should check out your cpu fan and try to clean it up. maybe it is all covered with dust. it cannot let the heat go out because your fan is clogged with dust. also, clean your processor.

My lil bro Computer wont relay any video

You have done a lot of the basic maintenance steps. You might want to try and reseat the CPU. Sometimes they "creep out of their sockets because to the heat. Also, check to make sure the CPU fan is running if you are sure the power supply works. Without a fan, the CPU can overheat and produce your symptoms. Hope this helps.

Ok, i have two things to ask 1: Where is the video card on a emachines W3503? 2: Could a video card swap be done between a W3503 and a W3052? Thank you for viewing :)

1. The emachines W3503 has an integrated ATI Radeon™ X300 based graphics card. It has also a PCI Express (PCIe x16) slot available.

2. The emachines W3052 has a NVIDIA® GeForce®4™ MX graphics card. I'm not sure whether it is integrated or not, but I'm sure that if it is not, it will be an AGP graphics card. Since The emachines W3503 has a PCI Express (PCIe x16) slot available for installing a graphics card, the swapping of graphics cards between the 2 machines is not possible since they support different types of graphics cards.
