If your camera uses a SD memory card then the write protect switch maybe on. SD and Micro SD memory cards has a smallslide switch on the edge of the card, which write protects data on the memorycard. Slide the switch from the READ position tothe WRITE position, which is furthest away from the contacts.
The above link goes to a site that describes how SD or SDHC cards can be used in newer C cameras such as yours.
Also, the following should be noted regarding sd cards:
Question :
Why doesn't my camera recognize the SECURE DIGITAL (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory card that is in the camera?
Answer :
Your camera may not recognize the memory card inside for one of the following reasons:
The card is not fully inserted in the camera. Turn off the camera, insert a card into the slot, then push to seat it.
The card may be corrupted. Reformat the memory card. CAUTION: Formatting deletes all pictures and videos, including those that are protected. Removing a card during formatting may damage the card.
The card may not be a certified SD or MMC card. Purchase a certified SD or MMC memory card.
See your camera's user manuals for more information. Go to KODAK Product Manuals, and select the manuals you need.
Your camera is only supporting SD/MMC Cards (up to 2 GB)
The card that you currently have might be faulty. Please try another card. You might also need to switch the camera over to saving pictures directly onto the SD card.1: Menu, Cam settings, Chose AUTO or SD card option Press OK
Note: If the SD card isn't in the camera or is unreadable the camera will automatically go back to saving you taken pictures on the internal memory.
1) This camera accepts SD cards up to 4 GB in capacity. Most 4 GB SD cards however, are "SDHC" types (check the label to determine which type you are using). If you are using a 4 GB "SDHC" card, it may be causing the problem, as it is not an "SD" card. Furthermore, any card greater than 4 GB is not compatible with the camera. Any SD card with a capacity less than 4 GB should work without issue.
2) Check the position of the lock or "protect" tab on the side of a compatible SD card to be sure it is in the unlock position. The camera will be unable to write to a locked or protected card.
This is a common problem that many people experience with their SD Cards. It is normally an easy fix and you can follow a method that I posted on my tips here:
Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.
If the memory card is not recognized in the PC or it is impossible to access the data on it, the controller on the card is damaged. There is only one way to get the data back, unsolder memory chips and directly access their raw data with a programable chip reader. Software can't help, that is a physical damage! The cause and solution may include one of the following:
The card may not be certified SD or MMC. Purchase a certified SD or MMC memory card.
The card may be corrupt. Reformat the memory card.
CAUTION: Formatting deletes all pictures and videos, including those that are protected. Removing a card during formatting may damage the card.
The card is not fully inserted in the camera. Turn off the camera, insert a card into the slot, then push to seat it.
