E74 I get the one lone red ring that comes up with the error E74 on screen. Yes I've plugged and unplugged everything back in - removed the hard drive and it will come on - sometimes in a couple of tries other times longer and once it's on it stays working. What can I do? It's still under waranty - should I send it back?

The cause of the E74 Error might be overheating of your console and for avoiding such error messages in future you need to put your machine at an open space. Ensure that it is placed near the window or you can also make some external arrangement for cooling the console such as cooling the machine through a pedestal fan etc. But as your Xbox already have E74 Problem, You can either send your Xbox to Microsoft for repair ( just for your information Microsoft is no longer providing Extended warranty for E74 Problem), Microsoft generally takes 3-4 weeks to fix the problem. If you can't wait for a month (I know most XBox gamers can not wait without their favourite Gaming device), You can also fix E74 Problem yourself and that too within an hour without any technical knowledge. I would suggest you to check out the DIY Xbox Fix Guide for more information.

E 74

The E74 error seems to be related to video problems. It's occasionally caused by a faulty AV cord, but more often than not, the solder on the ANA/HANA (in HDMI models) scaling chip has come loose.
Before the error, the system usually starts showing graphical problems like lines across the screen or snow. It's accompanied by one red light in the lower right-hand quadrant.

To fix it, unplug everything that's connected to your xbox and leave it sitting there cordless for 5-30 minutes. Then plug everything back in and play, it should be fine now. You'll have to do this every other time you turn it on however. Another solution is:

Wrap pennies in electrical tape and weigh the ANA/HANA down.

I have the E 74 error how do i fix it?

Hi,

Basically, this problem is caused by overheating, which is often an issue with most high-powered electronic devices.
As heat levels rise inside your Xbox 360 the connection between the motherboard and the video scaler (HANA/ANA) chip is damaged due to the expansion and contraction of the metal connectors.
Once you have experienced the red ring of death e74 once on your Xbox 360, it will continue to happen over and over again until you fix the problem permanently.
The process of repairing the Xbox 360 red light e74 involves opening up your console, removing the hard drive and disk drive (as these get in the way when you are navigating around the narrow confines of the case) and then locating the video scaler chip.
You then remove it from its seating point and clean the connections; an eraser works well for this. It then has to be seated correctly back in its slot. Once this is done and the hard drive and disk drive are re-installed you can put the case back together.
When you turn your console on again it should be free of the e74 error.
Good Luck and have a nice day.

I got one red light in the bottom corner and an error message with e74 i checked the guide for wat it was related to and it said it was my hard drive but i unplugged my hard drive and the problem is still...

  • here is info on the red ring of death that i know about and the solutions
  • 1 red light means the e74 error
  • 2 red lights means the xbox is overheating and was shutted down automatically
  • 3 red lights means hardrive error
  • 4 red lights means that something is unpluged
the problem is not in the hardrive itself, but its that the hardware scaler chip is damaged. now, microsoft is giving a full refund to people owning units with this error or so i hear. so you can rebuy a new unit payed by microsoft and your problem is solved

E 74 Error

The E74 Error is a problem with your graphics chip. It's very much like the Red Ring of Death and you need a repair. MS warranties units for 3 years from the E74 and if you are still in this warranty I suggest going to www.xbox.com/support and requesting a free repair from them. If you aren't in warranty any longer I would suggest seeking a skilled professional to assist you.

Xbox 360

What is the error code at the bottom of the screen & check for flashing red lights on the power button if 3 illuminate it the infamous RROD(Red Ring of Death-google it) which you will get a free repair for if its the bottom right quadrant flashing red then its most probably E74 or E61. E61 is a hard drive related problem so try playing without it, & E74 is the AV cable snapped inside or the GPU/CPU inside the xbox 360 has weak solders on it, I suggest MS support ASAP.
