50" Magnavox Plasma TV will not turn on - Red LED blinking 4x

I have a 50" Magnavox Plasma (Model# 50MF231D/37). For the past few days it has been slow to bring up a picture. I'll get sound immediately but it would take a couple of minutes for the screen to "warm up". This morning, the TV will not turn on at all. I push the power button on the side of the TV, the light goes green like it's going to turn on and then the green light changes into a red light that blinks 4 times. I've gone onto the Magnavox website to troubleshoot my problem. They suggested I perform a software update. Well, I tried that and the TV goes into the blinking red light mode before the software update has a chance. I've owned the TV for about 1.5 yrs and I bought it from Wa-Mart for a steal because it was a display model. I'm sure that in itself creates it's own problems. I bought an extended warranty, but if it is a simple fix, I'd rather not send my TV out for lengthy repairs. The BCS National Title Game is next Thursday! :o) Thanks! Moriah

Have a 50" Plasma with bliking red light on front of tv. Will not turn on at all. I have unplugged and plugged it back in until I am blue in the face. It worked the first couple of times, but now it won't come on at all. Can someone help me, so that I can tell my husband how to fix this problem? We don't want to buy another TV.

When you have the red light that blinks four times on the 50" Magnavox Plasma Model 50MF231D/37, you should look for the capacitors on the power board in the center of the of the TV. Look for two 3300uf, 10V, 105c capacitors that have a build up of pressure that has caused the top of the capacitor to look rounded instead of the flat top that will be on all of the other capacitors. Changing these two capacitors fixed the problem of the TV not coming on.
I had more trouble finding the capacitors than changing them. I could not find them locally so I went to an on-line electronics supply store where they were $1.65 each and $8.99 to ship.

I replaced both bulged or rounded top capacitors like suggested and now it works great! I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that posted a solution and also post a picture of the capacitors location.

Having an issue finding these capacitors online...anyone have a website they can refer me to?

  • bamagirlmel Dec 08, 2011

This picture is acurate, I used it today and fixed my t.v. in less than an hour. Removing the 40 some torx screws took the longest.once inside there are 6 or 8 phillips screws to take out and 4 electrical plugs to disconnect and the board panel is out. Jay tronix in rockford illinois has the capacitors,2 were about 9 bucks. (The capacitor numbers are correct as well) I found a local t.v. repair shop, mera's, that unsoldered the old 2 and reinstalled the new ones for 25 bucks. The solder iron would have ran me that @ radio shack. Best buy and other in home service companies wanted 150 dollars just to trouble shoot it. So the 2 weeks I had spent unnpluging my t.v. and waiting for the red flashing light to clear and then trying to get it to turn on were a waste of time once I realized how easy this was today. Thanks for the picture and everyones advise. Good luck. You will be your own repair man before you know it...!

Thanks to the guy that said to make the tent and use the hairdryer to warm it up in order to turn it on. For a temporary fix it worked perfect. As for buying the 3300uf, 10V, 105c capacitors I went to Ebay and bought 12 for $5. My husband and I also bought a soldering iron and soldering pump at Radioshack for about $18. We had never used a soldering iron but found it to be very easy. Removing all the screws from the back of the TV was more time consuming.

Could someone please post the link as to where we can find these capacitors online? I would greatly appreciate it!

    Thanks.

Listen to the people who mentioned the capacitors....I bought some off of ebay...bought a soldering iron and pump at radio shack and just fixed my T V. As mentioned....the screws take forever to take out and put in...all together took me just under 2 hrs by myself. Desoldering and soldering were easy. Remove the circuit board screws to expose the side you need to desolder/solder new capacitors. DO NOT just rip the old capacitors off and make sure you have the right polarity when you put new ones back in.....positive and negative

Have 2 50" Magnavox plasmas same model. Fixed both for a few bucks. I can turn them on and off and on and off at leisure. No more blinking red LED.

The SW upgrade thats pretty commical when the TV won't turn on. Work on the sortware upgrade after you fix this. Never turning your tv off again is not a fix. I admit though I did this for 2 weeks and I wanted to strangle my sister for turning it off when she came to visit. LOL 1 year later I am viewing them again. I will send pics of what to look for and instructions...

Thanks to everyone that posted here. You saved me a lot of money. I have never soldered anything before and was a little apprehensive. I followed the advice above and much to my surprise, i did it. I did buy capacitors online that were a little larger in size than the original ones, I did this by accident but made them work. At the end of the day I spent 30.00 including a soldering gun, desoldering wick and capacitors. Careful on the size ( it definitely makes it harder to fit) and watch for positive and negative sides.

Dear readers,

I found a bunch of videos on youtube for repairing the magnavox plasma. Here they are:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ueBrD55Idk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsJSzYVUWVA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7b_nTaZYcU&feature=related

On the third link I actually found the exact part number for the capacitors. You can order them here like he did:

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=CAP+3300uF+10V+elec+EB+radial

I hope this helps!

Replacing the capacitors does work but if you are not an expert at soldering I would recomend replacing the power supply board. I found a new one for 100$, it was more expensive than the 50$ in supplies to do the capacitor but way easier to replace (just a pluging in a few cabels and putting in some screws) then the capacitors would have been.

You have to make a tent for your tv and put some small heater inside (be careful), and bring the temp of your tv up and it will turn back on if you unplug it till the red lights stop, then plug it back in and wait for the green light to go out, when it does hit the power button on the remote. you should wait for the tv to be warm before you try and repeat till it works. then NEVER TURN IT OFF AGAIN! I have the same tv , and the problem gets worse if you turn the tv off ,all you will get is the red light

Obviously having the same root problem, I ordered and changed the bulging capacitors. Did not solve the problem, as the problem is exactly the same.
I have found on Ebay the circut board LJ44-00118A.
Would this be considered the next cost-effective option to solving the problem before trashing the 50" (Model# 50MF231D/37) and buying new?

Magnavox 50" plasma Won't Power on/Shut's off/Blinking red LED

The above fix, listed by Tom saved us!! We did as instructed and took off the back of our 50 inch Magnavox plasma tv. We were not sure what we were looking for so we googled capacitator (image) & there was a photo of a fried capacitator! Sure enough we noticed ours were "fried", we took out the board and went to an electronic supply store, bought the 2 capacitators ($2.00 each!!) and then found someone who did tv repair to sauter the new capacitators onto the board. (It is important someone who know how to sauter and recognizes polarity do do this for you) All in all we fixed this following the above instructions for $34.00 and our time. For a month we were told to spend hundreds getting a new power board!
Kudos to you Tom & thanks so much!!
