When my laptop failed to boot up I tried to use the Recovery Disc. the first time it went through the menus and then stopped. I discovered that the Hard drive had been formatted and partitioned. When I tried to restart the machine with the Recovery disc it gives me a message: ERROR: Could not get a language entry from INI file! Section: Common Key: InstallCMD File: Setenv.ini Exit..... Any ideas how I can overcome this problem?

If you run a repair with the recovery disc you won't lose any info. The only time you'll lose the info is if you run a complete reload. Run the system disc until it gets to the point of finding installed operating systems, at this point instead of deleting the partition, press R and it will reinstall the operating system files only leaving other installed files and programs intact. Keep in mind that many times when this happens, it's a hard drive failure. If it is a hard drive failure, then you will have to replace the hard drive and you will lose the info, sorry.

Create a bootable DOS disk and place it in the drive. Then restart the system. that should get you to a DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt you can tell it to change to the D: drive. You can tell if you have done this right because you will see a D: as part of the prompt. Insert recovery disk 1. If it does not start reading the disk type DIR at the D drive prompt. That will list all the files on the D: Drive. There should be one called autostart or install. Type in the name of the file including the extension. Hit enter.
A second approach is to hit F12 during start up and drop down to the second item and hit enter. That started the Toshiba recovery disk for me once when it would not read it automatically at start up.

After cleaning the DVD drive a number of times it started to work again. I have waited a little time to make sure it still works, and now it seems to be OK.

Thank you to eveeryone who posted a reply to my query. Regrettably, having had the machine checked at a local repair shop, it turns out that the hard drive is knackered and there is nothing that can be done other than replace it . Unfortunately, I can't affor that so I have had to dispose of the laptop. thank you for the sound advice. I hope that it helps others.
